This is just wasteful Gov't spending! I hope this Bill does not pass! Where's the damn telecom lobby when you actually need them.. lol.

said by antwanp:Couldn't the individual Airlines just ban cell phone usage as they see fit Again I agree. BUT, we all know the EFF, the ACLU, and every other group that cares more about a few individuals rather than the public at large would be suing the airlines and petitioning the FCC to force the airlines to allow cellphones in flight. So a law may be the only way to do this.

 | This absolutely does not need to be a law. It should be up to the airline to make guidelines regarding cell phone use in flight. |

LOL, right-wingers just can't resist taking a swing at the EFF and ACLU.
FYI, the EFF and ACLU exist because corporations and our government have a long history of trampling on people's rights. For example, years ago if a black guy was driving thru a white neighborhood, the cops would pull him over and question him. If a crime had been committed recently in the neighborhood, the cops would probably haul him in for questioning. Often, the innocent were wrongly convicted. If not for the ACLU, that scenario would occur more frequently than it does today. |

You do realize that a law banning the using of cell phones for reasons other than possible avionic equipment intereference actually DOES run afoul of the first Amendment, no?
Contrary to what you have said, the government enacting a law that bans cell phone usage on planes actually would be THE catalyst for a lawsuit, not the other way around.
And before anyone mentions laws banning cell phone usage in cars, the public safety considerations and mountains of data on the effect of cell phone usage in vehicles is why those laws probably won't get struck down. -- --- Eleven years of carrying The Clue Bat... |

fireflierCoffee. . .Need CoffeePremium join:2001-05-25 Limbo | reply to Linklist I'm not sure I'd consider cell phone use on a plane to be a civil liberty issue, or constitutional right such that prohibition of its use would be a violation of any guaranteed freedoms. I don't think the ACLU or EFF would either.

KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | reply to antwanp and being unable to use the phone during a flight or movie is just so harmful. the way things are going these days with people and their phones im about ready to order a cell jammer off the net and power it up when the ads and previews finish at a movie. and keep it nice and hidden making people wonder why their phone aint working. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

That's what we need....more confrontation and fights breaking out. And with your attitude of "use my cell phone when I want and where I want" you would be one of the first to tell someone FU. I am glad I don't run into many "me first" people like you very much. |

I bet the airlines are praying this law passes. Why? Because then they can say, "Sorry, but it's the law." That way the airlines don't have to take the blame for enforcing something they wanted to do. If the ACLU wants to fight the law, let them fight the government and not the airlines. Cheaper that way.
It all comes down to courtesy. The "me" generation from the 80's has gone berserk with doing what you want no matter how it harms anyone else. So what if i bother you, I'm on the phone. |

fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | reply to InTheMiddle I would buy that if the ACLU didn't exhibit it's own agenda. They don't just fight for civil rights.. they also use people to push political agendas too.. that severely diminishes their validity as neutral.
Further.. I don't think the ACLU is a savior.. there are other resources and good honest attorneys that do work on the side of the people.. |
