Bellsouth/At&t DSL Extreme 6 now a 7?

Well this is a post for another day regarding billing issues when you got standalone service with at&t, but it was cut out for a day then when it was reconnected the 6 MBPS went to a 7.

Truly my download speed would indicate it to be about 6.1-6.2 MBPS connection, then when it was reconnected it was about 6.8-6.9 MBPS which tells me its now a 7 MBPS connection service, anyone else see this with Extreme 6?

6.4 Mbps down and 420 Kbps up is the best I have done, and the DSLAM is about 1/4 mile from my house.

What are you using testing with that's showing that result? That sounds almost too good.

It's been like that for over a year. I often wondered how they managed real-world 6Mbps performance given all the overhead of DSL (PPPoE + the network being ATM.) When I attached the line to something a lot smarter than a Westell 2100, the sync rate was over 7000 with the ubr specified to 7000.

Current stats:
[down]
adslAtucCurrAttainableRate[20] = 6880000 bps
adslAtucChanCurrTxRate[20] = 6880000 bps
[up]
adslAturCurrAttainableRate[20] = 898000 bps
adslAturChanCurrTxRate[20] = 512000 bps

MaxSyn Profiles
The overhead is still there the downstream sync speed reflects the max attainable sync speed. The real sync speed is somewhere around 7500kbps that would result in throughput speeds of 6500kbps

I didn't say the overhead wasn't there. I was pointing at the fact that they're setting the speed limits higher than advertised to reach the advertised rates, at least downstream. 6M service is, in fact, 7000k. In the numbers I provided, sync and tx rates down are the same because they're below 7000. Upstream is being capped to 512k.

Thats interesting.

So this is intentional in order to have people at further distance reach the 6.0 speed or close to it?

It is intentional, I don't know why its done.
Years ago in the ameritech region the 768/128 speed package had sync rates of 768/160 the 160 sync rate would yeild at least 130 throughtput speeds.
