Re: How to override do-not-call exemptions One thing I tried that works wonders is to hook up my old 19200 baud modem and set to auto answer incoming calls during the day time. This drastically reduces the number of unsolicited calls in the evenings after a couple of weeks. |

| How to override do-not-call exemptions I signed up for Michael Geist's I-Opted-Out back in March, and, seriously, I've not had one telemarketing call since. It really is a superior service.  |

I was getting 7-8 calls a day, I'm down to about 1 call a day. (the odd time 2, but the 2nd one is some automated machine trying to reach someone named stonechild), its quite annoying.
so its defiantely helped. I had tried the call screen option from telus, but it only blocks 10 fixed numbers, which is really useless, because I find the telemarketers rarely call from the same number twice?
So this is really helping, and hopefully the DNC list in September helps even more! |

| It's funny how we supposedly progressed so far, yet we have fallen behind.
When I purchased my first computer in '95 it had a 33 k modem that had voice, data and fax capabilities. The software I was using could not only distinguish between the calls but was excellent for voice and I could use the computer as a speaker phone. Additionally I could program in my own "Do Not Answer" list (DNA), whereby the call would be terminated immediately upon receiving a call from one of those numbers.
Now I can not even find a modem that can do V, D, F that performs with the software such that I can use the voice. It can still determine the calls and respond to the DNA list I compiled.
Also Starchoice has a Call Display for when you are watching TV and want to decide if you should answer any call. That too used to have better capabilities in that I used to be able to edit the numbers to reflect DNA. Now I can not and have to rely on my memory. 
As for the DNC that is proposed, my feeling is that it is akin to having the fox guarding the hen house. Bell is one of the biggest telemarketers and they routinely ignore DNC List or requests, or have in the past.

Well I hate getting telemarketing calls also. Only thing I can say is it can be much worse trust me!!!
You could get automated calls to your cell phone between 2:00 AM - 5:00 AM with a recorded message of a US political speech from Hillary Clinton  This during a time a family member is extremely ill so anytime you get a call in the middle of the night you answer it and assume the worse only to hear Hillary on the other end.

Then to top it off you could google to find out the number comes from a spam political campaign located on the east coast of the US. After spending an hour with further investigation you could track down the FCC website to file a complaint only to discover you can't because you don't live in the US 
Then find out they are not calling your cell phone number. They are calling your Toll Free number (directly call forwarded to your cell) that you get charged per minute when someone calls you. 
It stopped after awhile thank God. |
