Continuous loss of market share in its largest business segment and move into
palatial headquarters with fancy video wall. Even though Comcast did not build
the building, the leasehold buildout and monthly rental
must be expensive.
With the continued loss of video subs,
Comcast can only cover its expenses and increase earnings per share by raising
cable rates. With raising rates, Comcast has hit the law of diminshing returns.
As rates are raised,
subscribers leave. There is no money to upgrade the Phila system. Shutting down
analogs puts Comcast
between a rock and a
hard place. There are
many analog subs that are complacent about changing providers and will never upgrade to HD. But those subs will gradually go away over the next ten years. Subs upgrading
to HD are looking at the other video providers. Comcast has to make a decision. Even if they didn't pay for it, they should be ashamed and embarrassed that their own hometown market is so behind with its channel count. *Edit, if anything Philly should be the shining example of future tech and so on..
