Island Jeff posted :
quote:
I would even go as far to say that the business service probably isn't effected by this DNS hijack so you have no experience in what MOST TDS customers have to deal with.

If I use the default DHCP-assigned TDS dns servers and enter a non-existent domain, I do get redirected to the TDS search/suggestion results page instead of getting a proper dns error. I'm not wild about this, but I've been using opendns previously who do the same thing, so I can't say it really bothers me much either -- I might get it once or twice a day when clicking a bad link or mistyping a domain and then I just ignore it.

quote:
Glad you are having great luck with your service, but you are paying for it.

That was actually precisely the idea. On satellite for years paying $69 and then $79 a month and considering a $199/month plan, the "wisdom" among satellite dealers is that even at that price it's not enough $ to actually provide great service. So when DSL came along, even though I had the option to get either residential or business here with both a residential and business phone number, I thought since the Internet is important to me I should put my money where my mouth is and sign up for the highest business dsl plan offered. I figured if I signed up for the highest level dsl plan and anything happened, I could then complain loudly in good faith! So far, I'm *very* happy with my decision. Best money I spend every month.

quote:
you can get a TDS 25mb down/10mb up fiber connection here for $20 less than your business connection costs. charters 16mb down/2mb up is also much cheaper, but as you can see residential customers are not a priority to most of these company's.

If something faster came along and was reliable, I'm sure I'd signup for it too ASAP!

My comment above about my service being fantastic was in direct response to:

quote:
I've noticed their service going downhill sharply lately, but this proves to me that they've stopped caring about providing quality service altogether.

Again, I agree with the OP that the dns redirection is a bit of an annoyance, a very small one for me, but I'm sure others might be more sensitive to it. Overall though if your speeds are slow or latency high post some test numbers to show what you're seeing.
--
Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan

Re: Redirection Service

Island Jeff posted : I think we may have very different perspectives.

After having cable from 1998 to 2000, I moved and was on dialup and then on satellite for 6 years with first starband and then wildblue. Several times it looked like a WISP would get started, but it never quite happened. Then in the March of 2008 TDS started providing DSL service here. All I can say is that the service for the past months has been tremendous here.

I don't have your perspective of having 16 MB service available for the same price as my 3 MBPS service. (I do work with dedicated servers remotely on 100 mbps links so at least I have some idea of what "fast" is.) I also do spend around 12 hours a day online, and I do notice if there is any downtime or latency increase. So far for $99/month for the 3 Mbps business package, TDS has exceeded my expectations for quality. I did post about my issue with the actiontec modem being affected by thunderstorms which a few times has required a power cycle, but other than that and one system-problem which caused downtime of several hours late this spring, service has been perfect here.

I'll yell and scream like the rest of you if my connection drops, or if speeds or latency are impacted. But for something I can easily bypass or fix myself, I say get on with it and enjoy what you have. Inputting an alternate DNS server if you don't like the redirection takes a few minutes at most to find and test an alternate. The only other thing I wasn't wild about was port 25 being blocked unless you buy a dedicated IP making it impossible to use some existing/old mail server accounts. But before DSL my problems here with satellite for example involved climbing on the second story roof to adjust alignment, or replacing a faulty part on the transmitter in winter when everything is icy, or cutting trees that grew into the signal path, or digging the pole hole and filling with concrete and a cable ditch so the satellite installers could get in and out more quickly, or considering commercial vsat systems that cost thousands of dollars that still wouldn't be nearly as good as what I have now. I think our perspectives are very different because for me the TDS DSL service is the best thing to happen in years here.

If you think it's slow, I could always UPS you a now unused satellite dish!
--
Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan

I see you in every thread (especially the ones with us users showing frustration) trying to tell us how great things are, and how your service is so wonderful. Well good for you. TDS is full of problems for the rest of us, and your good service should not be used as any kind of measurement tool for the rest of us.

Some of us are sick and tired of this companies crap. I plan on switching back to Charter. This Wimax product is slow, and I can get 16MB from Charter (already have it installed and it's unbelievable) for the same price I was paying TDS. I strongly urge others to get off this legacy technology TDS is using. You won't be sorry.

anon posted : Charter does the same thing in my area, its DNS based hijacking. you can just set your router or PC to use another DNS server and the problem is fixed.
OpenDNS has a nice walkthrough for changing these settings for many different router models or just changing the setting on your PC. OpenDNS also redirects so you probably wont be happy with them either.
There is a few other DNS servers that you can use that will solve your problems completely.
