[UFO]What the heck is this thing?

I'm sure there's an avid gardener or outdoor enthusiast who knows exactly what this is. I'm assuming there are a number of homeowners who will shake their heads at "city slicker" ignorance.

Hey. I went camping once .

To satisfy my curiosity, does anyone know what this thing is?

Used to see the shells all the time in NJ. Never saw one molting though!

Loud little suckers..

Thank you.

Can I assume that, unless I have hundreds of these not-so-little guys on my lot, they're benign? I like my lawn and trees.

I've been noticing between one and two dozen shells around my pine tree for the last few years. So these are the little beggars making me shout at night!

They feed off the roots of trees. Well, more like they feed off the nutrients in the roots.... they don't actually eat the roots, just tap into them, that's my understanding. Even if you have a ton of them, the effect on trees is negligible.

Nice pics of one molting.

They've been getting pretty loud around here the past week or two...

Yes, I missed it.

As soon as inkscarab replied, I thought of a line from a decent book (not series) I read years ago:

"In the year of the cicadas..."

Normally I would see burrows in my lawn made by cicada killers by this time of the year. No sign of them yet?

We get at least some cicadas every year around here, but Brood X is our major infestation. Brood XIV, this year's 17-year infestation, is more of a problem in the Northeastern parts of Cincinnati.

Fascinating creatures.

When I was younger, I watched a wasp (or a variant thereof) snag one of these suckers off a tree. I was able to follow it to a hole in the ground where I'm assuming it was going to deposit its eggs inside the cicada.

I gave up drinking and eating bad food. And in 14 days, I had lost 2 weeks.

When I was a kid, we would take the skins, sneak up behind someone and gently snag it on the back of their shirt... then laugh as the person walked around with that ugly thing hanging on them.
