I'm sure there's an avid gardener or outdoor enthusiast who knows exactly what this is. I'm assuming there are a number of homeowners who will shake their heads at "city slicker" ignorance.
Hey. I went camping once .
To satisfy my curiosity, does anyone know what this thing is? |

@cgocable.net | reply to inkscarab Thank you.
Can I assume that, unless I have hundreds of these not-so-little guys on my lot, they're benign? I like my lawn and trees. |

@cgocable.net | reply to Jahntassa I've been noticing between one and two dozen shells around my pine tree for the last few years. So these are the little beggars making me shout at night! |

Well, more like they feed off the nutrients in the roots.... they don't actually eat the roots, just tap into them, that's my understanding. Even if you have a ton of them, the effect on trees is negligible. |

| reply to Capitalist We get at least some cicadas every year around here, but Brood X is our major infestation. Brood XIV, this year's 17-year infestation, is more of a problem in the Northeastern parts of Cincinnati.

| reply to Capitalist When I was younger, I watched a wasp (or a variant thereof) snag one of these suckers off a tree. I was able to follow it to a hole in the ground where I'm assuming it was going to deposit its eggs inside the cicada.
