Re: [Connectivity] [CHICAGO] Fast Speed Test / Slow Browsing

Hey Ursine, you're not alone in this. Also in Chicago and also seeing the bizarre connection issues with RCN. Plug a site in, it sits, sits, sits, then loads fast 30 seconds later. Holy happens on some sites, but still really annoying.

I've tried CS as well and my speed tests come back find and they continue to say it's an issue on my end. I'm not that knowledgeable in connectivity issues, so really at a loss for explaining it. Just glad to see I'm not the only one that is getting this. My only idea was that it had something to do with the cable modem that is atleast a few years old.

Will probably give it a couple weeks before switching over to an ISP that works. Weill keep an eye on this thread for any solutions/responses from RCN.

Re: [Connectivity] [CHICAGO] Fast Speed Test / Slow Browsing

Ursine, I had an issue last year, that was appearantly only affecting me. I would recommend that you call customer service during the day and ask for 'retentions'. The reps in that department have the ability to contact the local market people in Chicago and have someone address the problem. Its not a quick fix unfortunately, but they did manage to get the issue that I was having resolved.

Yes, yes. Of that I'm all aware.

I've given up on calling RCN.

In the past, I've called them dozens of times. Even before the outsourcing to India, their customer service has always been substandard. Now, it's pretty much a joke. A completely frustrating waste of time with no positive result whatsoever for anything other that that which can be handled by a modem power cycle. Or a trouble ticket that gets opened and then apparently is sent off to the retirement home to live out it's life with all the other aged trouble tickets, but never to be heard from again.

Of course, I'm not the only person who feels this way about RCN's horrible customer service -- just read any of the reviews on this board or elsewhere on the web.

I've threatened to leave RCN before, but what keep me with them -- honestly -- is that it's difficult to change all 3 services, and the options available aren't necessarily that much better, truth be told.

I'm sure the RCN reps who are reading this know that. Combined with the knowledge that my issue is (to them) a minor one, affecting possibly only me, difficult to diagnose and even harder to solve, it's understandable from their point of view as to why no response here has been forthcoming.

It's not so understandable from my point of view.

As I said previously, having given up on calling, I had hoped that maybe some help could be found here. Apparently, that thinking was naive and in vain.

Now I hope that this thread might at least serve as cautionary example to anyone else considering RCN.

I'll stop asking for help now.

Get a trouble ticket going.

Once established - you might get help.

Those that "check in here" are unpaid volunteers - much like our "member helpers"

Aye. Each & every one

This forum is not a one stop fix, however.
You have to execute your part in the scenario

When you said "Toshiba router", I assume you meant to say "Toshiba modem".

Over a week later, and the problem continues.

Line quality test results:

Some pages load completely, most do not.

Anyone at RCN? Please?

The problem continues even with my router out of the loop.

The issue isn't slow speeds, it's slow browsing; pages failing to load completely or taking a long time to load. (Although tonight I'm only getting 7-8 mbps.)

RCN? Anyone?

RCN informed me that the Toshiba router I had was not good for the Mach 20 service. On 8/9/08 I went to RCN and swapped my Toshiba router for a Scientific Atlanta, here is my test.

Ursine1, Completely overlooked, but have you tried removing your router from loop? I was discussing your issue with a friend and this was suggested. For some reason I assumed you already tried this...?

No amp. The cable comes thru the wall is split: one to HD TiVo, one to modem. Looking at older info I've saved, it seems that level has always be in that range; the slow browsing issue is a new one. I'm guessing that the within-tolerance downstream power level isn't the culprit here.

Still showing the same line quality problems: 37% loss in low bandwidth stream, and 100% loss in medium bandwidth stream.
