JD : Good Idea...

Thats what I have been doing basically. I try to escalate and all they do is say well the latency isnt on our end. Its on the "Internet" and we cant controll the internet.

So you describe discards like I do... Its a measurement of High latency... Not Loss.. but Discarded and then sent back on track.

This is a big issue with streaming apps as well as voip svc. Thanks for ur thoughts on the subject.

Bane75 : Wow, so they are about packet loss but not latency (discards)? That's pretty poor, it sounds like you need to try to escalate the issue to someone higher up.

Latency is usually a symptom of an overloaded link some where in the network. Are you seeing other issues like timeouts on pings and traceroute tests? I would suggest using ping plotter to generate a graph for them, maybe you show them at what hop the latency is being introduced.

JD : When I have had to call over to my ISP for packet discards they had no clue what to do. All I could do was explain to them that there was too much latency and packet discard on my line.

What they always came back with was, " We don't test for discards, we look at packet LOSS ".

I am measuring my packet discards with testyourvoip.com and now its ok but getting the ISP to even listen to me was a nightmare.

Voip service is ONLY as good as the internet your running on, but how do you explain Discards to the ISP in a way for them to take action??

Anyone else have a good explanation on the difference and how the ISP could measure this issue?

P.S. I do not have the issue now, I just wanted to figure out a better way to explain to the ISP what the difference between Discard and Loss was.
