Re: [iPhone] iPhone GPS apps gripe

What applications tell you your MPH and altitude?
There are a couple of "Speedometer" type apps, one is SpeedBox the other Speed.

Both vary greatly in accuracy, eventually showing close enough speed if driving at a constant speed. Nowhere as close as the speedometers in a dedicated GPS system though, those are bang on from what I've seen.

Is that due to software or hardware?

Who knows, really... It could be the tools given to the developers to access the GPS are limited, or Apple's built in coding for the GPS chip sucks...

Maybe for a dedicated GPS NAV app like from TeleNav or TomTom, they will give those devs special access to the raw GPS data, who knows...

I've noticed that the included GPS/ Maps app is far better than any of the free or fee based so, I think it is either Apple keeping quiet about all the info needed to implement an accurate GPS app or, the coders are hacking it up..

FYI - What good is a GPS app if the calculated accuracy is 3786 ft!! Yes, that's what the app gpsCompass just gave me here with clear blue skies. Useless as teets on a bull.
