anon : Yea I know its tricky... Have had chat and explained all. Only thing is there is still some doubt and I want to be sure before making a stink about this. It might be me that is paranoied after all... And I don't want to start blocking sites, pages, etc as he will just go to any other location
Prob the best thing is a key logger of some sort. will look! Thanks

docrice : While passively monitoring is one solution, it's only a secondary answer since the root cause of the problem lies in your trust of the child's online activities.

So I agree with what others have said - sit down and talk to your kid first. Then perhaps "hub out" (something like an old Netgear DS104) from your router on its outside interface and sniff from there (you can also unbind TCP/IP from the interface you're sniffing on for a bit of added protection on your monitoring system). I say the outside interface because if your kid's machine is connected wirelessly, the traffic won't be visible to the rest of the LAN since the unicast traffic goes directly through the router to the outside. However, the problem with monitoring on the outside interface is that you're more than likely to see a TON of traffic due to all the incoming portscans and other garbage floating in the outside world. On the other hand, you could set up a chained internal network where your AP routes traffic to yet another router which itself connects to the ISP and you can monitor that way, effectively creating two network segments. This kind of gets a bit convoluted, of course, and might be overkill for your needs.

If you only want to see cleartext stuff like AIM, you can always filter based on that or use Wireshark's feature to roll captures into separate files after x amount of time or data buffer fill-up. This assumes, of course, that you know specifically which protocols your kid makes use of.

However, things get a bit tricky if the protocols use encryption (such as encrypted AIM via Trillian). For that, you'd have to install monitoring software directly on the machine your kid is using. You could even go to things like keystroke loggers (hardware or software), but this starts getting into a gray area...

In any case, a setup like this requires you to use the protocol analyzer, and periodically inspect the captures. That's a lot of work.

nwrickert : Buy a separate wireless access point, and buy an old fashioned 10 mb/s ethernet hub (if you can find one - maybe eBay). Connect AP and your computer through the hub. Then all data is shared on the line. Put your ethernet card in promiscuous mode and log all packets - that might need suitable packet sniffing software.

Better have a big disk to store the data, and lots of time to browse through it.

I agree with Anav , that this is the wrong way to supervise your child.
--
AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.1
