bad news for pittsburgh customers

Comcast just informed me that they won't be adding the basketball or soccer olympic channels. Also because they added the new guide they used up all the bandwidth to add big ten hd or overflow channels until they remove more analog stations which wont happen til next year. That's just what I was told in a email.

they actually said they don't have bandwidth to add HD's because of the new guide? That's really bad info.

Good ole Comcast keep up the great work of denying your customers of more channels.

Comcast will also be taking off FSN HD in Pittsburgh to add Big Ten Network HD. So there really must be a bandwidth crunch.

Now, excuse me in advance, as I'm not as cable-savvy as the rest of you. But, WHY NOT ADD MORE BANDWIDTH?

sveng, where did you hear this at? I'd rather have fsn hd than big ten hd as fsn hd will show my penguins this winter!!!

FSN in pitt is a waste of bandwidth to start with... 90% of the time its a darn test pattern!

They'll be on Mojo just like the last 4 years. Pens/Pirates games in HD show up on 226, prempting whatever programming exists on Mojo.

Tyler, they would add more bandwidth if they could, but it is expensive to replace all the head end and line gear. Return on Investment just isn't there. If your system wasn't upgraded to 860Mhz or higher in the last round of upgrades than SDV or a complete digital transition will free up the required bandwidth required for more HD. All cable companies are in the process of SDV and digital transition, not just Comcast.

Pittsburgh has issues. The regional head end in Coroapolis is fine. Most head-ends in the region are fine (750-870 mhz). The problem was the few municipalities that were non-Comcast in the '90's that recently became Comcast. The elder TCI areas have all been upgraded with the exception of Ross who is undergoing upgrade. Mt. Lebanon and the entire New Castle district (3 headends) are holding back the entire region. Upgrades on the Adelphia nightmares are underway, have been for years. There is also a HUGE push back from the aging base in the region. When three analog channels dissapear, there's more negative reaction than the positive reaction of adding 9 HD channels. In addition, the franchise agreements are by municipality, NOT county. One head-end could be subject to 25 different franchise agreements, complicating any hope of fast changes. For example, the Castle Shanon head-end serves: Baldwin TWP, Baldwin Boro, Castle Shannon, Mt. Lebanon-Sunset Hills (non-adelphia), Brookline, Whitehall, sections of South Park, sections of Bethel Park, South Side, Hays, Brentwood, and some others I can't think of. Each of these have their own franchise agreement with the exception of northern Baldwin Boro, Brentwood, and Whitehall which share one.

what's the problem with the weirton system, mark? I mean tci upgraded it in the 90's, before that dimension upgraded it in the late 80s, then att worked on it in 2000. I was told at one time it was "state of the art". What happened since then that comcast has to take away channels to add more? Was it the fact that tci/att was using the 12 or 13 to 1 compression? Did they use faulty equipment?

Also will the olympic hd channels be added to weirton, and will espnu or the big ten overflow channels be added? How about the weather channel in hd? If you don't want to discuss this here you can pm me if you want.

Our feed is from Coroapolis, we get what Pittsburgh gets for national feeds. There's nothing wrong with it, it's still state of the art 16 years ago...

so why isn't weirton getting more new channels? I mean it's a 750 or 860 mhz system, right so it should be able to handle new channels without losing other channels?

Also there was an article in my local paper that my local government is launching a government/educational access channel with programming from governments in my county, ohio and marshall counties in wv. Do you have any idea when this channel will be launching and on what channel?

Sigh...

because New Castle, PA and Mt. Lebanon, PA haven't finished their upgrades from the disastrous equipment Adelphia left behind. Since the REGION can't handle the bandwidth of the next wave of channels, the REGION will have to wait. When the high majority of head ends in the REGION can handle a switch, then the frequency adjustments will be made on the REGIONAL fiber and the head-ends that have space will add channels. When only one to four head-ends don't have room, then the region moves on without them. As it stands, the region is maxed.

The PEG should be launched below channel 19, wherever space is made for them, when the PEG decides to launch.

Your also not counting the cross-regional feeds. Do a clear QAM search: we have 3 CBS stations on our coax, 2 NBC stations, 2 ABC stations, 3 FOX stations... because of Wheeling/Steubenville, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown all infringing on the head-ends territorial DMA. There's more HD on our system then we are legally allowed to view; another reason alot of the OTA carriage is encrypted. A very expensive upgrade will need performed to stop that; a new head-end or rerunning primary fiber feeds to each DMA's nodes and splitting the head-end into two service regions.

I moved to New Cumberland last fall. My "area" is Weirton.

so that's why comcast can offer abc wheeling and wtae, plus kdka and wtrf hd. My question is why not offer cw pittsburgh (for some penguins games), fox pittsburgh, and wpxi in hd(or wpxi weather plus)? Also will weirton get the overflow for big ten and big ten hd, how about the weather channel hd?
Lastly when will comcast launch the new educational channel (i'm out of weirton by the way as well and it was in the daily times today about the educational channel).

CW Pittsburgh's DMA is smaller and we ain't in it. Same goes for WPGH, it's owned by Sinclair so it's not too much to miss.

WPXI-DT, which is their digital SD, HD, Weather Plus, and Retro streams are being blocked by WTOV. On Feb 17, 2009; we may loose ALL WPXI. It does not look like their new DMA includes Weirton any longer as they can no longer argue their OTA signal makes it here due to the decrease in wattage they received on their DT frequency and WTOV is an NBC station, they reserve the right to uphold their territory. KDKA can do whatever it wants, so we will continue with two CBS stations; for now.

Big Ten and Weather Channel will occur in Weirton as it does in Coroapolis. The PEG channel will happen... later? No idea... I don't have insight to that level of Comcast.

when is coroaopolis get the weather channel hd and big ten hd and overflow?
Also why does the weather channel show steubenville weather instead of weirton or northern panhandle weather?

A system only has some much available Bandwidth. It is the same as those that had 4gb Hard Drives, and try to still cram 10gb of information in them.

greg i understand that, but how does one headend, seperate from ours, have to do with whether or not we will get a channel? If the specific headend has room then add the channel not say "well so and so system doesn't have room so we can't add it anywhere until that system has room."
