| reply to Gokuu Bell has also changed its logo. It is just now "Bell" with leaner letters that touch each other (except the 2 Ls). And it will rename its services.
I remember a similar move.
The first thing the last CEO of Digital Equipment Corp. did was to change the Digital logo, and zap the common "DEC" name, forcing every employee to use "Digital" instead.
The logo change was amazing. They changed it to a different hue of red, and more importantly, they changed the dot on the i from a square dot to a round dot to indicate the new Digital would be more flexible and less rigid. Woopty Doo !
Afterwards, Palmer proceeded to destroy Digital to scale it down so it could be sold to someone (Compaq bought it). Palmer never fixed Digital, in fact it sabotaged it, killing DEC's profitable products as sacrificial offerings to Bill Gates so that DEC could sell Windows.
So, this George Cope guy comes in, and changes the logo, changes the ads, changes the product names, but we are still throttled, still intends to impose 60 gig limits etc etc.
If Bell really wanted to fix things, it would start by folding its "Solo" mobile brand into Mobility (or whatever the new name will be) and not impose stupid limits/fees on the core mobility product offering (contracts, system access fees etc).
It is really stupid of large corporations to develop subbrands to offer affordable services and keep the main brand to milk the idiots willing to pay more and willing to sign contracts. (Rogers->Fido, Telus->Koodo, Bell->Solo and Virgin).
Why not make the main brand competitive ?
If this Cope guy is to make only cosmetic changes to Bell, Bell will continue to go down. |

| reply to Gokuu The quickest way to increase profitability is not "milking" their current customer base, but trying to move as much of their customer to be bundled. For example, with Rogers - they have Cable, and Internet. If they get one of those customers to take local home phone service - it has got to be very profitable for them - almost all of the additional revenue should be profit. Same thing with Bell. If they take there existing clients and make them leave through neglect or outright abuse of that relationship - they loose the chance to move that client to a bundled solution. |

If this Cope guy is to make only cosmetic changes to Bell, Bell will continue to go down. With their antics of the past few years, they probably believe the new marketing twist will make ppl think that it's a totally new Bell. Lots of folks have heard the hype of the OTPF buyout, and will have the frame of mind that major positive changes are about to take place. The new cosmetic changes will probably sucker enough new customers in. I doubt that it will do much in the way of damage control, for customers that already have a bad taste in their mouth. |

Why not make the main brand competitive ? That would be like GM dropping Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Buick, and making Cadillac more competitive. From a purely dollars and cents POV, it would be stupid. If SOME customers are willing to pay extra, the company would be stupid not to take their money. And setting up an "economy brand" gives them "the best of both worlds". I.e. high profit margin on suck^H^H^H^H customers who use the expensive service, and a little bit of profit on the "economy brand" customers. |

| reply to Gokuu nice how bell now wants former bell customers back. LOL Look at their site telling why you should choose bell. One that caught my mind was
"Super fast access speeds² We have one of the largest fibre optic networks in Canada, and we continue to bring this leading-edge technology to even more homes, improving your Internet experience."
Bell makes me laugh! |

On the surface, this appears to be valid. However, look at where GM is today. By allowing bloat to continue, and having separate brands and no clear vision, GM is going down and going down fast.
I'll give you a very good example of a company that also marked up its prices because of its name: Digital Equipment Corporation. It refused to lower its prices to compete against windows because it claimed it was not in the same market and wanted to preserve the quality image of its brand etc etc etc. Digital went down. Big time. It was the 2nd largest computer company in the world before.
The legacy companies such as Bell who think that can price their services at a premium because their marketing department tells them that their brand is strong enough to get people to willingly pay more for "quality" will go down just like Digital. It is but a matter of time. As soon as people discover there are alternatives without stupid contracts or hidden fees or service restrictions, they switch and never come back.
You can argue "But Bell has Solo and Virgin". But that doesn't change the fact that if a Mobility customer switches to Solo or Mobile, it is because the Bell brand has been hurt and that customer doesn't want to buy other bell services.
A competitive company offers different tiers of service under the same brand. It simplifies advertising, branding, distribution and hence reduces overall costs and strenghtens the brand.
The problem with Bell is that it cripples certain services in order to preserve older legacy offerings that are prices at much higher levels.
So if you want a fixed IP with Bell, you need to pay megabucks because Bell doesn't want corporations to swicth from Bell's extremely expensive services to some low cost offering. Same mentality as Digital, trying to protect a non-growing market by sabotaging the growing market.
And when a company realises that its artificial restrictions may start to cost it customers, the come up with the idea of contracts that reduce the churn. And once contracts are in, they can screw customers all they want and customers can't leave.
Bell Mobility could offer high value services and low cost services under the same brand if it wanted. Same network, same quality of reception/coverage. No point in creating separate entities.
Ask yourself what happens to Bell's "premium" pricing abilities when its brand gets stained ? Their whole business model falls down because Bell is now riding on its former image and is screing customers instead of trying to be competitive and improving services.
The interesting aspect is that perhaps thise whole "white label internet reseller" speeches by Bibic is what Bell wants to do in the future: Get the independants to be Bell's low cost brands. And Bell would fully control the service offering and pricing (for instance, control how much extra gigs above 60gigs would be billed at).
Companies should strive to imporve their services and be competitive. They couldn't strive to screw their customers as much as they can get awat with. Rogers has been like that for some time, and now Bell is joining the ranks. |

And once contracts are in, they can screw customers all they want and customers can't leave. Companies direct their marketing at getting new customers, not retaining existing ones. A contract ensures they can completely ignore that customer for the term. They are also counting on customer apathy. Many people can't be bothered to look for a new ISP, bank, insurance company, etc; they just keep renewing their existing ones. When they finally come to the realization that they have been ripped off and decide not to renew their contract at the end of the term - that's when all the special offers to renew suddenly appear.
As long as customers accept this business model, it will be the way that business is conducted. |
