| Simple AV & firewall wanted
All I need is an anti-virus & a software firewall. I have Super Antispyware & Spy Sweeper.
I want to get away from the security "suites".
Looking at Zone Alarm (free)for FW, & AVG for AV. Anyone use those 2, or have another suggestion?
Currently have McAfee, but only installed AV & FW. Tried Panda AV & FW last year, but it's also a suite & caused all kinds of problems with Yahoo Music. Hate to pay for the whole suite when I won't use it.

1 edit | I'd recommend Comodo 2.4 and Avira (free version).
Comodo 3 is better, but a lot more of a pain to configure, 2.4 is still suiting me just fine. (Both Comodo versions are free)
As far as Avira, with the free one, you'll get a ad screen (for the pro version) when it updates its definitions, other than that, it's the best I've used. Better detection rates than Avast from what I've seen and read.
EDIT: one caveat about comodo, if you don't read the alerts carefully, you might think that it's asking you many times about the same thing, the details are important, as it'll tell you why it's asking you again about a program you may have already approved. |

As others have suggested, Avira or Avast for your anti virus. Avira has better virus/malware detection. But the free version doesn't have spyware/adware detection. It has the update pop-up. And the update servers for the free version sometimes have issues when there is new program update.
Avast has spyware/adware detection. But it's over all detection is lower then Avira. No pop-up ads and no problems with it's update servers.
Try the free versions of both and see which one you like more. -- Dr. Web + SuperAntiSpyware Pro + Router/SPI |
