| [Services] Help for a networking novice
I use Bellsouth DSL service with a Westell C90 Modem/Router.
I recently replaced my Home networking Router with a Linksys WRT110. After installation I went through the setup wizard provided by the Mfg. All the configurations came up fine (all the lights are normal). When I tried to connect to the internet I failed. If I connected directly from the modem to my PC I was fine. I then called Linksys support and they had me change the Default IP Address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1. After I made the change I was fine (Complete Internet access). Since then I noticed that whatever I try, I cannot use the port forwarding feature in the router to open any specific ports to incoming traffic (Vuze is an example). Here's where I need help - does the change that linksys had me do, make sense to anyone (My networking ignorance comes tot he forefront)? I know it got me internet access but I think it's the root of my port forwarding problem.
One other thing - on my new router my internet connection type is set to Automatic Configuration - DHCP - when I try to connect via PPPoE I can no longer get on the internet.
Thanks in advance for any help |

| I went through the procedures you shared and all went well until I tried to establish the PPPoE Connection. It just kept trying and never timed out or gave me an error. I thought maybe I was using the wrong login/password but it's the same combination used by the Westell Modem/Router when it's in PPPoE mode vs. Bridged Mode. |

| reply to lehozle Are you using the full username@bellsouth.net as your login or just the username? |

| reply to lehozle Linksys had you change the LAN side addresses to 192.168.2.x because the WAN side connected to the westell, by default, is 192.168.1.x. You cannot have the same "network" on both sides. Of course, you want the westell in bridged mode instead of routed mode, but that's a whole other mess; the new internal addresses will work either way. |

| reply to soobydooby Yes I'm using the same Username@bellsouth.net login and password that is working on the Westell to establish the PPPoE connection. I'm baffled. When I put the Westell in Bridged mode and try to connect the PPPoE session from the router, it never connects |

edit: For this to work, the modem needs to be in bridge mode and connected directly to the computer. |

said by lehozle :I know it got me internet access but I think it's the root of my port forwarding problem. You needed to make a change to the modems setup in addition to the changes to the linksys. Here's a link to a faq detailing the change to the modems setup. How do I enable IP Passthrough on a Westell? IP passthrough will allow the westell to give the router a public IP address which will allow port forwarding to work. |
