Don't Hate, Participate!

When folks decide to use their cell phone in a way that involves me, why I just join the conversation! Stare at them and participate! React to what they're saying. Share your OWN opinions on what Skank A did with Boyfriend B ("Oh no she di'int! Oh no she di'int!!"). If they get uncomfortable, well, that's their problem; THEY'RE the ones being rude, not you. You're just being sociable!

My experience has been conversation over and phone turned off in less than three minutes. Even better, the person fears the Psycho They Perceive To Be Next To Them (you). And what are they gonna do? Complain to the flight attendant? "Um, Stewardess? This guy is annoying me. What did he do? I was trying to talk with my girl Brittani and he--he FORMED AND SHARED OPINIONS!"

I'm having difficulty grasping the objections to cellphone use on planes and in general. Is there a difference when people adjacent to you are having a conversation or do you also object to that? Or is it because you can only hear one side of the conversation?

I certainly understand objections to loud or rude conversations, but those are not the exclusive province of cellphones.

And I were having a conversation with someone, either in person or on a cellphone, and you continually interjected to the point that it was bothering me, I would first advise you to mind your own business, and then yes, I would report it to the flight attendant. Forming and sharing opinions is never a problem, but being obnoxious is.

I have no problem with folks talking with someone else either in person or on their cell phone so long as it's done politely and with respect to the people around them. If they're sitting next to me on a plane, in a bar, or wherever and it's obvious that they're aware of others in the vicinity and are moderating their impact on said people, I take that respect and pay it back in kind.

IF, however, they demonstrate no respect for my existence (which is why the first line of original post included the qualifier "use their cell phone in a way that involves me") then I feel no compulsion to pay respect to theirs. They set the terms of engagement, not me. They defined the appropriate way to behave around others, I just feel empowered to act on the same level.

It's that whole Do Unto Others thing: if they're cool, I'm cool. If they put on an asshat, I feel I have permission to put one on also. And I just found a way to put on a bigger one...
