Re: Laptop keeps shutting down

I'd look at not only 2 fans but also replacement heatsinks as well, as for how to disassemble it.

it appears the heatsink and fan are a all-in-one unit.

I'll swing by on Monday, I actually told him the temp of the CPU, I completely forgot to mention that there was no Fan RPM registering. I will also ask him about thermal paste.

If you folks can give me a link on how to open a laptop up that would be great, I am a noob with laptops.

The good news is that if it needs a new fan/heat sink he will not charge me for labor and he will even let me buy the fan from some where else (I already found one on Ebay) and he will install.

I am just so pissed for not doing this myself, but now I know and knowing is half the battle. I mean $70 (non refundable) just to take a can of compressed air and spray!!! Arrgghh.

I'd 1st get a 2nd tech to open it up to verify that the fans are connected and that the system is actually clean. did they give you any documentation detailing what they did for $70??

or you can open it up yourself to see if the fans are connected or not, your call.

The thing is that if they didn't fix the problem, bring it back and egg on them. Tell them what should have been done in the first place. Ask him the question about the fan speed and C if what they say. At least we can enjoy an answer from someone trying to wiggle away from his responsibilty.

all he did/told me was that there was a lot of dust and needed to clean out. SO I forked over $70 and that is what he did. So no fan rpm obviously means the fan has ceased functioning.

they probably did not either replace the heatsinks and fans, or forgot to reconnect the originals. I see no fan rpms, which is not a good sign at all. what did they actually do, based on the repair ticket?

What could be causing the laptop to shut down?
HEAT.

The problem with some repair place is that, when they find a problem (relate to your complain of cource), they will fix it, then if it seems OK, they will stop (may there be more than 1 causes).

The overheating may stem from dust, thermal paste, ambient temperature, were you put your laptop and any combinations of the above (plus whatever I forgot to mention). I'll take it back and tell the FRY's guy that he didn't fix it and tell him to give the laptop another BLOW (a blowing job), then reapply some thermal paste.

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop. For the past 4 weeks it shuts down by itself. I took it to Fry's Electronics, they took it apart and found lots of dust, so I assumed it was a heat issue. I took the laptop home and turned it on. After 20 mintues the screen went blank, the laptop was still running, but I had to shut down. This morning I turned it on at 11:25 AM and it worked fine untl 2:30 PM.

What could be causing the laptop to shut down?

I have two screen shots of the temp of the CPU when I 1st turned on the laptop and the temp about 2-3 hours later.
