anon : In the beginning we did have a reset every month to zero. It wasn't long before WildBlue initiated the rolling FAP. I believe for the one reason cited, hogs trying to squeeze out maximum up and down near the end of each month.

While they have never completely fapped my system, I have been given notice twice that I was close to the maximum for upload. First time @ 80% and recently the warning came @ 70%. And, although they are not supposed to cut back your speed, it does get throttled some. That is bothersome, but if you recycle your system it generally stops the slowdown. Try shutting off the modem at night or when not in use. It helps get your allotment back down quicker.

FAP we have to live with it. They aint going to make it better.

tobicat : Because it would defeat the whole purpose of the FAP. The first week of every month all people who were FAPPED are almost so would be downloading all kinds of stuff and the system would slow down and on the last few days of the month all the greedy ones that think they should get every last byte they paid for would be downloading stuff they don't even need just to get all they paid for.
--
9000 spaceway III, 7000S SatMex 5 1270, Dlink wirless

anon : I think it's wrong that you don't get a fresh 17,000 mb at the beginning of each month. You shouldn't have to stop using the internet service that you pay a lot of money for for weeks to get it back to 0% usage. It's a rip off IMHO because you don't get what you pay for.

Just watching streaming video makes your bandwidth usage go up.

Island Jeff : Agreed there -- it was easier when it zeroed out each month so you got a fresh 17 each month. It was also easier when you didn't have to get down to 70% to be unfapped. And it was even easier at first when you got 22 GB + 6 GB instead of 17 GB + 5 GB for the same price.

But I'd still take 17/5 GB that I can do what I want with when I want rather than Direcway's XXX MB per X hours which would actually stop me from getting things I need or want when I want them. Sure direcway has the fap-free AM hours, but the whole point for me of broadband is being able to get the files I want quickly when I want them rather than having to schedule them to get them the next day.
--
Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan

Island Jeff : As the others have said, it's not as good as rollover cell minutes where your allotment grows, but it can be useful if you're out of town for a week, or for example if you want to use it heavy on the weekends but then are at work during the week, or the reverse if you use it for work during the week and then take the weekends to be outside a bit... with hughesnet you get a shorter daily fap, whereas with wildblue you get greater freedom to use a large amount at any given time as long as it evens out over the 30-day period. But with greater freedom comes greater responsibility too in that if you use all a sizeable chunk of your 17 GB 30-day allotment you then have to use it lightly until it drops or "rolls" off. I prefer the freedom+responsibility to the hughes system that is more likely to interrupt what I'm doing and give me dialup speed when I'm trying to get something done.
--
Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan

N4ST : Actually, a rolling FAP means that you are continuously in a carry over state. That's the basic definition. There is no way to accumulate extra credit. You get the 17GB and that's the most you can use. If you are like most users you will typically be operating on any given day with less than 17GB because you have used some of it in the past 30 days. If you go out of town for a month and then return, you should have a clean slate. All of your past usage will have been zeroed and you will have the full 17GB at your disposal.
