What's the deal with Spynet? Is that something I should signup for? What does it really do and does it make Defender a 'better' product?

Thanks
Robert

It's just the validation required to download the program itself that seems to be a problem with Firefox.
for Firefox there is MS validation plugin that when installed works seamlessly

You'll find you can download updated definitions every day with Firefox. It's just the validation required to download the program itself that seems to be a problem with Firefox.

Defender now is getting frequent engine and definition updates and with Sprynet enabled it turns to a HIPS and all for free. Also its among the only HIPS that works on x64 OS.

Okay - installed it, updated definitions, and ran a scan (nothing found). Had to use IE to download it - Microsoft would not let me do it using Firefox (even with the extension installed)- the validation 'code' when entered into the box and pressing continue gave me a "this page could not be found - after doing this twice, I opened IE and it worked fine - then shut IE and went with FF again.

So, the consensus is to go ahead and install Defender?
Sorry for the delayed answer.
IMO it can't harm to install MS Defender, it will add an extra layer of defense to your PC Please keep in mind that detection and removing/cleaning rates are average. Positive facts are that MSD is light on resources and provide fast scans.

You are probably correct !

So, the consensus is to go ahead and install Defender?

Probably you have entangled "new Windows Defender Web site" with "a new Windows Defender"

Perhaps this link

kind of mislead me into thinking I read "New version".

Windows Defender is very much a good idea. However, the last Update to Windows Defender was on 5/23/2007

I am very much concerned you have possibly fallen victim to an email going around, purportedly from Microsoft, offering an Update to Windows IE7, the MSRT Tool, and Windows Defender. This is a scam to infect you with Windows XP Antvirus 2008/2009.

Here is one example:

this Windows Defender? Any other are no it

Yes, it is a good app to have. Protects the whole pc not just the browser

not so sure about there being a new version although it is regularly updated so possible

MS just released a new version of Windows Defender. I 'believe' Defender is mostly used with IE ??

I use Firefox 3.0.1 on XP Pro SP2 and with SpywareBlaster (the free Home version) and Avast (again, the free Home version) along with AdAware (which seldom finds anything because SpywareBlaster stops most all 'data mining' cookies).

Back to Defender - is this actually a good application to run in addition to the app I have? Does it slow down processing?

Commnets?

Thanks
Robert
