[IA] Anybody else experiencing outages? (Quad Cities)

Hi all, I am from Davenport, Iowa and I have been without internet at my apartment all day. I was wondering how widespread this problem is and this is the only place that I could think of to check. Obviously I'm not going to get much of a response from people who are having problems, but I was wondering if anybody close to me had any info..

I've been trying to call MC's support numbers but I'm getting a busy signal now. When I called before the automated system said that they were experiencing outages in my area.

Any information would be great -- thanks in advance.

I had a friend call mediacom and most of western and central illinois is out. Huge outage at the headend. It obviously is affecting Davenport, Iowa also. Sounds like a pretty wide outage as my friend is in Abingdon, IL. (10 miles south of Galesburg, IL. South of you about 50 miles.)

Internet access has been down since around noon here in Davenport. Just came back up. I like how their tech support and customer service numbers were just a busy signal all day. Nice touch.

Yah...I loved how the lines were busy also....

My service just came online a bit ago...down since noon, so close to 11hrs down.

Yet mediacom had the nerve to call me when the internet was down to try to sell me phone service...LOL!

There was a card acting funny in the Head End, they took everything down to swap it out real fast, but then it didn't power back up when they tried (totally unrelated to the OP but killed everything). Some one from Des Moines drove halfway to drop off a replacement so they could get it up tonight.

My service in the Illinois Quad Cities went down after Noon and was not back up when I went to bed at 10:30pm.

An odd thing about this outage is that when a friend who has the VIP service called in, they told her to reboot her modem. Both this friend in Iowa and another friend in Illinois did not have phone service.

On the local news, they told everybody who had Mediacom phone to NOT reboot their modem.

Who was correct and why?

Had nothing here, either. But I didn't lose mine until sometime after 1 p.m.

However, I was able to get through to tech support to at least get the recording acknowledging the outage in the QC. I only got a busy signal the first few times I called.

The Dispatch (Moline, Ill.) newspaper today is reporting the outage was due to a "cable cut" and affected 60,000 in Iowa and Illinois.

The Times reported that at first and then when they updated it was an equipment failure. So who knows. It's back up so all is right with the world. Except for the busy signal when calling them and then the 40 min wait time.

Internet was out yesterday as most everyones else was. We had phone service until I rebooted the modem. Then nothing!
Don't know why!

The Dispatch article indicated that a customer was told by MC that, if you rebooted your modem, it would mess up your MC phone service. It is strange, but it's too bad there wasn't some kind of mass phone message that MC could have sent to their phone customers (affected by the Internet outage) warning them not to do that.

It WAS equipment failure. The unit that assigns the IP address failed, that's probably why they said not to reset the phone modem, because it would have to request it's IP and it would not get one. That's why the modem were stuck with the "online" light flashing they were stuck waiting for response and IP address.

Sorry seams like some areas had phone and others didn't. My mother-in-law who lives 4 blocks from me had phone service. And I heard that Coal Valley had phone also.

It wasn't a card. I talked to mediacom and to confirm my story ch 6 had the same thing. All of il and half of iowa was out over 84,000 people. All do to some construction worker dug up a Fiber Optic cable and severed it by accident. Had to be a huge cable to knock so much out. . I woke up this morning with the inernet back up. Just emagin fixing all those little fiber optic lines in that cable

That's interesting because my friend (who is a tech for Mediacom) called me while he was going halfway to Des Moines to pick up the replacement part for the Head End. I'm pretty sure I believe him over anything else.

Thats kinda hard to believe they drove all that way. Something that important they could have flown over with in hours. I tend to believe talking to mediacom and the news. And one card causing all this problem. There is backup equipment for something this huge. There should also be backup for such a situation as 1 broken Fiber Optic Cable. Like rerouting. This should not have have happened with backup service.
