With the 1080i signal the local NBC affiliate here is pumping out and delivery through Verizon FIOS it is eye popping on my Sharp Aquos. Events like this are one of the reasons why I bought in to HDTV anyway.
because you're not getting additional compression on fios tv. it looks as good as if you were getting it from over the air. 1080i is pretty good until you get into fast motion[then glitching occurs]

I tried both 720P and 1080i setting from my cable box. Both seemed equal
Fast motion events will be better in 720P [no glitching, however it'll be a bit fuzzier than 1080i]

1080i DVR-MS Recording HD Still Frame (click for full size)
Looks great here, both on my 32" Sharp Aquos HDTV (Clear QAM) and on my Hauppauge HVR-1600 HDTV Clear QAM Tuner (DVR-MS file still frame attached). The DVR-MS recordings made using Vista's Media Center look awesome and use about 20 megabytes per second of recorded 1080i HD video (large HDD recommended).

dvd536 ...

I am never sure which does the better conversion.. cable box or TV.

If a network is broadcasting in 720P like ABC or ESPN to have the cable box feed set to 1080i thereby letting the cable box convert 720P to 1080i which goes to my TV which up converts to 1080P...

or

set the cable box feed to 720P and let the TV up convert to 1080P. This of course means the 1080i signal from certain networks is converted to 720P by the cable box which then goes to the TV and is up converted there to 1080P.

What a circle... is sorta like the old "who's on first" comedy routine !!

"P" settings are always better for motion so generally I set the cable box to 720P and let the TV do it's thing. Also having a 46" TV as my largest HD TV, there really is no clarity of picture that the human eye can see between 720P or 1080P in that size of TV. (so say CNet and others)

Has always been a question that I never totally found an answer for.

I have DISH but use OTA for my HD local channels. I think they look better then on DISH.

I tried DirecTV for about 3 hours, canceled immediately after installation and seeing what I thought was a terrible HD picture. In reading about satellite HD signals it seems they are all compressed and rate shaped to the point where they are HD Lite so to speak hitting 1440x1080 at best. Compared to the HD from my cable provider it looked worse to me on DirecTV.

RCN Cable is rate shaping some HD channels in my area so they can offer more HD with using less bandwidth until they convert us over to all digital and then the bandwidth should be abundant enough to take off the shaping of HD.

I have never tried OTA HD, not even sure if it is available physically to my area. Maybe something to look at though...

A good place to start would be antennaweb.org. Plug in your zip code, and it gives you a wealth of information (distance, direction, etc.) about OTA stations in your area, both HD and SD. Helped me a lot.

Doesn't look good for OTA HD .. only one, WPVI DT ABC, out of Philadelphia. Rest are local independent stations. Philly is about 46 miles away. New York is 80-90 so we are not in good area for OTA.

It also depends on what kind of antenna you are using and its designed range. With a decent long-range antenna and pre-amp, you shouldn't have too much trouble reaching Philly, unless you have large obstructions in the way. New York City is also within the reach of extra-long range antennas but Philly is probably better for you.

I just created a seperate thread about the pixelization noticed. especially during the Olympics even during HDNET shows. Since I am a newb to HDTV, I thought it would warrant it.

I am on Shaw with a Sony 37 Bravia HDTV 8 ms LCD.

I believe it was stated before that this was a symptom of compression by your local carrier, in this case, Shaw.

I do notice some pixelization on my screen (Samsung A650) with OTA broadcast but I hardly notice it since it lasts for split seconds.

TV looks good, 1080i...some of the better HD on cable though I have a small audio delay which is non-existent on other channels.

Very nice, david... I bet a lot of people don't realize that they can turn their PC into a HDTV and HD PVR for under $100.
