and the other options are
"802.11n"
"802.11n (802.11a compatible)"
"802.11n only (5ghz)"

So what would it be doing to talk to a 802.11b device like the iPhone?

And any idea how to force the airport extreme to be 802.11b only?

There is a B only option. But it shouldn't matter. The iPhone is an 802.11g capable device and should work fine with the settings you chose (2.4GHz b/g/n, 20MHz channels). I'm assuming you've tried other channels instead of letting it autoscan?

I have this same issue. I just stopped turning 3g on. It's RARE for me to go somewhere and get more than 1-2 bars on 3g. I have almost a full EDGE signal everywhere I go.
Is this specific to the iPhone, or does AT&T's 3g coverage just suck that bad?

Not if you are getting things like unlimited text/data, do you really need these? In any case you will still have a locked phone at the end of your 2 years or with an unlocked one you can change plans if you find you don't need ALL the extra features at any time.
With the "GO" phone its $25 for 3 months, 10 cents a minute, free to other AT&T phones plus $1 a day if you make a call and pay as you go (much higher) for data/text and use the WIFI free. Since you are not using the limited 3G coverage you are still getting excellent regular coverage.
Everyone should work out before signing contracts what the best deal is and the restrictions.

The topic is- 3G problems, if you don't get 3G in many places what is the use for the new I-Phone? You are going to find even in a place like NYC there are many areas you will not even get service! What is the use of any phone thats unreliable even in NYC? I want to make it clear I am not blaming APPLE its AT&T's terrible 3G, do you really want to sign a contract worth thousands of dollars over 2 years for this? At least you can turn off the 3G, so whats wrong with the original I-Phone at a great price/no contract? It will then do just about everything the new one will and you will even be able to make calls everywhere and change plans immediately without much penalty.
