Midak : 1. I didnt have the first one so cant say.
2. Hell yeah it does, slow as shit sometime when trying to type login password on myspace full site.
3. dslr is one of those sites. Wasnt this one of the ares old Steve-O touted as being one of the things that makes the iPhone superior to other smart phones?
4. Crashed so many times yesterday until I hard booted but it started back in again today.
5. Slow as shit and dont get me started on the fact that I cant send or receive pictures.
6. Never tried this.
7. Sad thing is we have a cell tower on top of our building and I go into edge quite often outside.
8. Not sure about a basic Nokia since I have one of those too but it is kinda sad the size of the hole.
9. Yeah, I can burn it half way down in a few hours but then thats probably due to me going online too much.
10. One of the reasons I may dump it and get the Treo.

Man, you covered most of my same issues with the phone. My Treo 650 that I bought over 3.5 years ago had the ability to edit contacts or anything else while on the phone. I could also add a category for each contact, making filtering/searching for contacts so much easier. It did video, it could send pics and video via text and yes, it could play music. It also came with some Excel type app that I used frequently. Copy and pasting was something I did often on it also. Now, not a "OMG must have" but it would have been real nice to use my Apple BT keyboard to enter contacts, etc. on the phone but no, wasn't happening. Seems like the iPhone is far from the standard smart phone and instead is just and iPod that can make phone calls.

anon : thats exactly why I am waiting it out, even on the original,I have unlocked phones that have exceptional reception/voice quality, cost very little to operate, a 10.1 meg camera taking unbelievably good pics and video. and GPS/MS Streets & Maps that works on my laptops perfectly even under buildings but with a 17" screen & WIFI, hell, 10 years ago I did not even have a cell phone. The only new gadgets for me lately is 3 MagicJacks saving me a ton of money.

That is true however the reports of the 3g chipset (or firmware) being rushed are certainly iphone 3g specific.

Basically people on many (or all?) 3g networks are not getting the speeds that existing 3g phones are achieving, and are having problems with signal strength.

There is surely confusion between 3g iphone specific problems and just coverage problems or cellphone network issues, especially when the iphone 3g is the first 3g device for many. However I think there are enough documented issues with 3g speeds and signal strength to indicate apple has an issue.

I'm hoping they can identify and work around the problem if it is in the chipset by releasing a firmware upgrade.

anon : I don't need to show proof, its all rumors but it is all over the internet if you bothered to look. With this much smoke there is likely to be fire. problems are being reported all over the world with many 3G providers. If the 3G works for you or you don't need it there is no problem, except finding the money for that expensive contract.

Unfortunately, due to the very extreme competition for all new gadgets you simply cannot test properly out in the real world- I warned of this before the phone was even released, the effects of extreme data usage and heat on the phone/battery are also unknown at present.
I also had a solution- get a used unlocked/jailbroken original I-Phone on ebay for $300 avoiding the contract as well. They have been out long enough for you to know where you stand with it.

Supposedly 90% of the problems people are having are solved with a soft reset (hold down sleep and home for 15 seconds until the apple logo appears, then the screen goes blank, then appears again).

I was told by an Apple tech guy that the way the phones and software are right now it's mandatory to turn off or soft reset the phones at least once every five days.

No big deal. This is still the coolest phone out there.

Pentaxian : The 'Go' phone? Isn't that a basic, does nothing sort of phone? You pay in advance? The iPhone is leagues above it in functionality and I must admit.. When I was a Verizon customer I used my crappy LG flip phone for one thing and one thing only.. Making phone calls.. Now that I have a phone that has all this functionality, it is making my life easier. I actually am getting more done while being mobil and not to mention my laptop has gotten a major break from usage. And to answer your question, YES, I need data. And why would one buy a data capable phone and only use it for making phone calls? If you're goig to do that save yourself some serious cash and simply buy a standard cell phone that does nothing else but make phone calls.

Ah. Hold OPTION while clicking the radio mode pulldown to reveal the other non-802.11n options. Hiding menus is one of Apple's solutions to idiot-proofing their hardware.

anon : Actually CNET is reporting that there "may" be a problem with the new phone 3G circuit-I find this hard to believe., I had assumed that all the problem is with AT&T (see this sites home page), in any case who really needs it with WIFI everywhere? If you have a strong 3G signal everywhere you take the phone and have a very heavy need for data/text the new phone/contract may be the best for you but watch out for the heat generated, lets wait and see what an independent tester like consumer reports has to say regarding extremely heavy/data/3G usage on the new phone/battery, an original I-Phone unlocked/jailbroken is a bargain for $300.(and I would bet its still worth $300 a year or 2 from now)

Seandhi : I just got my iPhone on Friday; I updated immediately to 2.0.1. Overall I am pleased with it (I am typing this message on it... And the keyboard is sluggish), but I am having many of the same issues that you are having. Sometimes it seems like wifi is just as fast as my 3g connection. I had the 8525 and the Tilt before I got this phone, both were 3g, and I could go a day and a half with moderate usage. I have to charge this one half way through the day. I am going to turn off gps and wifi tomorrow to see if that helps... They were huge battery killers on my Tilt.

Edit: My keyboard is sluggish, but nowhere near as bad as that video...

Well, at least for myself, 3G is never a problem in my vicinity and I'm already an AT&T customer and the data plan is the same as my current smartphone. I don't see the problem. Now, if the iPhone has problems holding on to 3G signals for me, I will have to assume it's the phone and it will go back.

anon : I have a 3G from Rogers for about 2 weeks now. I had a 2G from (*cough*) AT&T before that was obviously cracked to run on Rogers in Canada.

The 3G with 2.0 seemed to have some issues with "stickyness" during application start etc., but 2.0.1 has, for me at least, fixed all of those.

I read reports that people have issues finding wireless networks etc, but I never had any. The phone finds the same wireless sources as the MacBook Pro, which is already more that the Vista Laptop of my friend finds...

When connected to WiFi, running AppStore's SpeedTest ( free ), I get 730 Kb down and 265 Kb, which is exactly what the MacBook Pro get's from the same wireless router.

The batterylife is about the same as the 2G, as long as I remember to turn off the GPS and 3G when I don't need them.

Come on now, people.. everybody wants 3G but does not want to accept that those chips are HOGS when it comes to battery life. Turn the shit off when you don't need it.

djrobx : My Samsung Blackjack really seemed to be able to pull a better 3G signal, but it definitely suffered from EDGE fallback too.

One thing that I was able to do with the Blackajack was lock it into 3G-only mode. Overall it seemed to work a lot better that way.

The plan from ATT for the iPhone was far cheaper than anything from Verizon was.. In my case I got TWO iPhones for $139.00 per month for everything.. ONE 'the Dare' from Verizon was $150 with all the additional plans you needed to get the same functionality as the iPhone has...

anon : I mentioned this on YOUR forum, yet you still went out and got the new I-Phone (2 of them if I remember), so now it does not work on 3G, again, as I pointed out on YOUR forum, AT&T has terrible 3G coverage operating on only 1 of the 4 bands, so you should take it back while you can and get the original unlocked and save a ton of money too.

I have this same issue. I just stopped turning 3g on. It's RARE for me to go somewhere and get more than 1-2 bars on 3g. I have almost a full EDGE signal everywhere I go.
Is this specific to the iPhone, or does AT&T's 3g coverage just suck that bad?

No idea about iPhone specifically, but 3G where I live is full strength and very reliable. Has been for a long time.

Alan : Yeah, my phone seems to slow down over time. A fresh reboot seems to speed it back up.

The browser does seem to crash a lot. I'll be reading something and all the sudden the browser shuts down. It's pretty annoying.

As a side note, I wish the quicklink icons at the top of the DSLReports' page were a bit larger so I could easily select one without extra zooming. :)

anon : ALL of these issues with the new I-Phone had been already been addressed by me in these forums. My suggestion-
buy the original I-Phone (still completely cool) used on ebay with V2.0 installed, unlocked/jailbroken.
You will save at least $4000 (over 2 years) over going with the ridiculous AT&T contract and at the end of 2 years you will still have a great valuable phone. Forget the 3G, you can get a used original for about $300 and have a choice of providers.

I purchased this for my daughters iTouch and seems to work quit well. Probably thinner than the iPhone and about the side of a playing card. Probably the same battery the iPhone and iTouch us in a different case?

What's nice about this kit is you can charge your iPhone/iTouch in the car or at home with the purchase of this one kit.

Me too. Although this is the 2nd time I'm giving it a chance. First 2G iphone I had shown terrible WIFI reception issues. Even in the same room as two different wireless routers, the iphone would show less than full reception regardless of channel selections. iphone couldn't pick-up WIFI signal outside of the house. My pda could get a signal outside in the backyard! Night and day difference.

This will be my second attempt with the iphone. Reading this thread, I'm concerned as you are. I ordered the iphone, then justin creates this thread!

djrobx : I think 5 and 2 are related. There's something painful slow going on with the SMS section. Mine actually got worse with 2.0.1. I can't even attribute it to having a lot of conversations or text cached; I'm a pretty low text user and cleared out my phone a couple months ago.

I noticed the same with the screen brightness issue. You're right, it just doesn't work as well as it used to with iPhone 2G.

Carrier or not, something needs to be done to improve 3G service. Too many of us see what you describe. We're fully 3G covered here and it seems like I rarely get to use 3G service, because the phone's always falling back to Edge to get a decent signal.

I find maps "forgets" to use the GPS at times. It only triangulates via cell tower. This is when I'm outside with zero obstructions...

Restarting the phone seems to get it going again.

Falsey advertised apps that you have to pay for.

Stalling - basically the iPhone sometimes takes forever to do something. Much worse since the update. Not always but it happens.

I'm seeing the same problems with numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, & 11.

3g coverage in my area is excellent. Definitely no complaints there.

As for battery life, I knew the battery life would be worse than 2g, so I don't consider it to really be an issue.

I'll also add another that was supposedly fixed in 2.0.1: The contacts lag. My contacts are unusable for approx 5 seconds after being opened. It seems worse when opening them from the contacts widget from the home screen as opposed to opening them from the phone app.

Count Zero : The iPhone isn't 802.11n compatible.... just 802.11b/g... so your router is probably having to switch from n to g when you connect to it via wifi, that may be part of the problem (especially if you have multiple other devices connected).

Course it has poor battery life compared to 2G, but it's still got equal or better battery life than any other 3G phone you could buy right now.

I totally agree on the edit contact while in a call statement, I've run across that problem once or twice myself.

justin : probably because a sliding door plus the thicker wrapping of the battery (to make it safe, not bendable) and all the rest of the extra bits required would either reduce the size of the battery or increase the form factor of the phone.

anon : Why don't they make a simple sliding door to change the battery? This is absolutely silly. This makes the device anything but mobile. A 2nd battery is so simple, yet Apple is dumb enough to think that people won't need this. They also would love to view all the private info you have on your phone when you send it in for them to replace the battery, and then send you a crusty scratched phone back which isn't the same one you sent in.

justin : well, auto-brightness worked ok on the 2g iphone.. It was very handy for battery saving. It would sample ambient light once when the screen turns on. In a dark room it would be minimal back-light.

Now I have to set the brightness high (all the time) or i can't use it well outdoors.

My WiFi speeds are adequate and average. I don't have a n wireless to compare to, though.

I've never seen this work in the manner that I would expect it to.

justin : yes, the question implicit in this list is which of these problems is definitely peculiar to my phone.

In other words, if someone else has some of these I'd like to know so I can wait for another firmware update, rather than sending the phone back and asking apple to replace it.

I know #2 #4 #9 are common.
#10 and #11 are UI complaints.
#8 is a design issue

that still leaves #1, #3, #5, #6 as possibly just unique to my phone..

7. Poor 3g coverage (this is a fault of my carrier). One bar only for 3g, then it falls back to gprs and there are full bars.

8. Ring volume still nothing like the most basic nokia. Too easy to cover up the little noise outlet and render the phone basically silent. Too easy to change the ringer volume accidentally and not realize it is no longer loud enough. I wish the mute slider had a selectable time out.

9. Noticeably poor battery life vs 2g

10. Can't edit a contact while on a phone call (how do you make a note of a new number?)

11. Sometimes it would be nice to stop the auto-rotation to landscape mode. eg when I look at the screen when *I* am horizontal?
