I found with mine, that two little rubber pads glued to the heatsink posts that the mounting screws went into, were actually stiff enough that they were suspending the whole heatsink/heatpipe assembly above the Northbridge so that it could not make contact. I removed them and found by looking at the transfer print of the thermal compound that the heatsink/heatpipe assembly now is making full contact across the northbridge. The NB temps have dropped at idle to the mid 40's and never rises much above mid 50's at full stress. The heatsink/heatpipe assembly now is warm when operating, which is what should happen. I am amazed that I did not experience any instability with the NB operating at 60+C idle and approaching 80c under stress. It did shut down one time when I had the NB thermal shutdown protection set at 80c, so I know it ventured up to that temp one time. At any rate, I'm glad it is finally resolved and look forward to some modest OC experimentation.

Ender
--
My Jeep is not an SUV. Your SUV is not a Jeep.

Ender3rd : Ok, since I am babbling away to myself here... The Northbridge chipset temperature took off on me again after I rearranged some things in the case. Being adventurous I pulled the motherboard out of the case and found that the massive single piece Northbridge - Southbridge heatsink/heatpipe assembly was feeling kind of loose and sloppy. I removed it (12 spring loaded bolts through the motherboard) and found from looking at the thermal compound transfer that it was only touching the chipset very lightly at one corner, and possibly not at all when mounted in the tower case, which of course explains why the heatsink was never warm. At any rate, the solution was simply to re-mount it and tighten it down to make good contact. It runs nice and cool now. Another reviewer at Newegg ran into the same issue, so if you grab one of these boards, check the whole heatsink/heatpipe assmbly to assure that it is making good contact with the chipset.

Ender
--
My Jeep is not an SUV.
Ender3rd : Meh... I found the issue. When I installed the lower drive cage into the bottom of the case I forgot to plug the front 120mm fan back into the MB header. That really disrupted the airflow badly! The NB temps are 20C lower with full case circulation restored. No problem running endless loops with Orthos now.

Time to shop for a huskier HSF for the E8400 though, the stock cooler is a bit on the light side for the modest OC that I have in mind.

Ok, back to COD4 again! Mmmm... sure looks a lot nicer than it did on my old ATI Radeon 9800!

Regards,

Ender

(edited for grammar)
--
My Jeep is not an SUV.
[Temps] ASUS Maximus II Formula 775 (P45) Northbridge Temperatur

Ender3rd : I just put together a new gaming system built upon the ASUS Maximus II Formula 775 motherboard. The system came right up without any issues and has been running trouble-free so far. The only question I have is about the reported Northbridge temperature, which runs around 60C at idle and rises up to as high as 72C when running 3DMark2006 or while in games. At the current time I am not overclocking at all, and in fact, right now I am running all stock voltages and only have the stock Intel HSF mounted on the E8400 duo-core processor. The CPU idles at 33C and rises up to around 40C when stressed. The MB and case temperatures never rise above 38C under any conditions.

So, I have two questions:

1. Since the chipset heat pipe assembly appears to rely on the processor fan for cooling, has anyone found that their Northbridge temps dropped significantly with the installation of an aftermarket HSF?

2. I realize that chipsets on the newer boards will tolerate fairly high temperatures, but I am curious what temperatures others are seeing with their Northbridge at idle and when stressed. Is a 60C to 72C range over the top? I have read in various forums that Intel seems to imply that anything under 90C is just fine, but have not found a definitive statement about that.

Thanks for any insight.

Ender

ASUS Maximus II Formula, E8400 @ 3.0g, 2g OCZ @ 1066, XFX 9800 GTX+ 512meg, Corsair 650W PS, Lian-LI 60BPlusII window case.

(Grammar edit)
--
My Jeep is not an SUV.
