| Verizon's DNS lookup is insanely SLOW!
It takes forever for DNS look up. I dont get it. I'm in Valley Stream NY and Verizon's FIOS DNS is so slow. Its dialup stupid slow
Its been this way for many months now and i guess they simply dont care about improving their speed?
I see that they have added their own little url snooper that guesses incorrect or unknown URL's. Ever notice that? Enter in a wrong URL and Verizon's own wannabe google comes up.
ARGH.. as i was writing this... my room mate comes in asking if i'm having problems connecting to the internet...
Perfect timing. |

| i actually have been having the same issues. the service is incredibly fast, but surfing the internet is slow. i type in a url and it takes 2-3 seconds for the page to finally start loading. once it starts loading its really fast. anyone know how to fix this? or how to change the DNS lookup? |

| reply to JCF I just called up and went through the tech support nonsense.
They're forwarding the issue to their techs to run some tests. I didnt allow the tech support person to remotely use my pc so she couldnt go further. I know its not my computers. She tried to blaim it on not having anti virus... but i know thats not the case, because i have a few computers some with and some without etc... plenty of different configurations here to know its not software.
So anyways she's forwarding the DNS ip's i had been using (verizons) and they'll run some tests on their end.
In the meantime i think i'll see if i can use an openDNS |

@verizon.net | And you're right... Speed is fine... I get full 30/5... its the dam DNS thats lagging badly.
The DNS cant even find GOOGLE
Often it just sits there looking up google.com and i'm just in shock.

| I noticed this too.
So I switched my DNS servers, and noticed a huge difference to many sites. Your ping time also plays a role in this as well, as information has to travel between you and the DNS server before a website can even be reached. |

Smith6612 Premium join:2008-02-01 united state | reply to JCF I have never attempted to do that, so I have no clue on how to set up a DNS caching server. There is probably a tutorial out there, but it's probably hard to find. |

| reply to JCF I've been having problems with verizon's dns lookups for quite some time. I'm a resident of PA with their 15/2 plan and sometimes it gets to the point where I just plain cannot look up a dns. If I know the ip address of say google.com great, otherwise it might be hours before it seems to start working again. I'm trying the opendns switch on my router now and hopefully it will start working again. |

| reply to JCF So to be clear, the issue is when say you open up Firefox, and then it takes longer then what you would expect for it to load google.com. However, running speed tests show everything as normal? I noticed this began happening when I got the Actiontec and the TV service. Before this I was using the Dlink they originally gave me with no TV service. It does seem to load up the initial web page a second or two slower then I would expect. |

Correct. Also you can watch the status bar at the bottom of Firefox and see how long it says "Looking up...". If it says that more than 2 seconds, your DNS is noticeably slow. |
