So entering a building (1900 takes more of a hit while traveling through objects than 800, tower are positioned for 800 density, not 1900 density most likly) can make your phone loose the HSDPA signal, but switch to the EDGE signal that still works. GSM (voice + GPRS/EDGE data)
3G UMTS/WCDMA (voice + HSDPA data)
3G devices also allow voice and data to run at the same time (i.e. surfing during a voice call).

3G spectrum (at least here in L.A.) is 10MHz out of 45MHz
NYC has more spectrum and sites overall, but I suspect it 10MHz out of 55MHz there.
