This is news??

It's not news to me. I don't have an iPhone, but another AT&T 3G phone. In my house, 3G is weak (maybe one or two bars) with EDGE a bit stronger. I have no way on my phone to force it on EDGE, but I wish I could. As my phone hops between the two, I may lose a connection, the phone doesn't ring, or may not be able to make a call the first time I dial.

Yep. You can force the iPhone to EDGE, but you can't force it to 3G. From what I've seen 3G actually can work very well with only 1 bar, it's the switchover to EDGE that makes things messy.

On my old blackjack, I used to lock it to 3G, and that worked decently.
