Re: "problem on ATT's network"

Actually it's the phone, but don't let objective facts get in the way of a good AT&T bash.

I'm sure AT&T to blame in some way, like "they didn't catch the hardware fault during testing/lack of testing".

No, it's not the phone. I've tested comparable phones on both networks with a friend in the past. At least in my area, Verizon's network outperforms AT&T, and the distortion I heard before the call dropped is something I'm used to hearing on the other end when I'm talking to someone who's on AT&T Wireless, even from a landline.

You can't win for losing though. As a moderator of an AT&T area, I used to get a lot of complaints that I was being pro-AT&T when I was reining in senseless bashing, not to mention having someone from the site tell me that people have a right to complain.

Now I've got someone who doesn't know me from Adam telling me that I am bashing AT&T myself.

I report facts, buddy, and encourage the same in others. Now go do some research. I did.

edit: corrected spelling of reining

lev See Profile is not a ATT basher. If some thing is afoot then he will state the truth. Depending on the area ATT's voice quality has some thing to be desired. In the chicago area Verizon seems to beat ATT for voice. In other parts of the country ATT is better.

I tested Verizon out 2 years ago and it did sound much better then ATT. In areas I go Verizon had very bad coverage up north in the UP of MI and Northern WI which I visit frequently. I decided to stay with ATT for that reason if that wasn't a factor. I am not sure I would still be with ATT.

As someone who carries a Verizon Blackberry and an iPhone I can also support lev See Profile's findings. VZW's wireless network for both voice and data are far superior to ATT. With VZW I get maybe 2-3 dropped calls a year and I travel all over the country so I'm not just speaking for Chicago's network. With ATT I get 5-6 dropped calls a month and when the signal gets low the person on the other end experiences dropped words.

AT&T 'does' have good voice quality... as long as you have a phone that you can disable the AMR-half rate codec.
Most RAZR phones are capable of this. I was actually flogged on AT&T's wireless forum (have been a member since it was forums.attwireless.com).
I actually had good coverage off of Drummond Island/DeTour village while in Canada (saved on roaming )

Drummond is one spot I visit during winter. ATT has ok coverage because Drummond's cell tower is GSM by a 3rd party carrier not ATT. The coverage was edge which is ok but voice quality wasn't like it is when in 3g.

Although a few verizon/alltel folks got a signal then lost it this past winter. The year before they never got anything.

What I have noticed with ATT is it has a hard time handing off from tower to tower in certain areas. Those areas are not rural areas. We are talking about the suburbs of chicago. For instance I refuse to take calls while on the train from the city to my suburb. I will get dropped calls like no tomorrow. The main reason is some towns are 3g and others aren't. It seems those are the troubling spots.

Like I said for what I need ATT works but they could do much better with voice and data IMO.

If you're running AMR-Full Rate or Enhanced Full Rate, the call is as clean as 3G, with the exception of handoffs (rare in the boonies).
I had clean calls at Whiskey Bay and Beech Beach (and decent data sessions) while on the south end of St. Joseph's Island for the week.
On my old Motorola V505, there is a way to show handoffs between sites, and it was a few times / minute... even while not moving - garbled calls a lot with AMR-half rate... decent on AMR-full rate and EFR. T-Mobiles calls never had this issue.

I don't think this can be done with the smartphones but wouldn't put $$$ on it .

On GSM, I rarely get dropped calls. On 3G I get dropped calls quite often.
If I force the phone to AMR-full rate or Enhanced Full rate codecs, I have clean calls. This is a hack, and I'm sure that AT&T doesn't like it.

I think many phones have the ability to lock up the audio codec. The hard part is finding the code.
LG CU series has a nice feature for it, and many Eurospec phones come with AMR-half rate disabled by default (it wasn't well accepted in many European countries).

Can you do this on an iPhone without jailbreaking it?

I have to believe its a mix of the network and the phones. I have had AT&T in the Grand Rapids, MI area for years now, and never had any reception problems. With my Iphone, its the same thing. I get good service and performance from my phone. I couldn't be happier.

I just took a trip to Minnesota and had service the whole way over there and back. No dropouts at all.

Yet, there are people who live in my area with the same Iphone that have service issues. So who is right here? Is it the service? The phone? Could be a mix of two for that matter.

My boss has the Moto Q and AT&T, when he calls me on it 75% of my side of the conversation consists of "what?". It was like that on his last several phones too. Sounds like talking through a Pringle's can with a sheet of water at the end.
