[DSL] DRTCP021, Tcp Receive Window Settings do not "take"/sa

Hello,

After restarting Network Connections and even restarting the whole machine, the new settings do not "stick." What can be done to ensure the new settings take?

Thank you for whatever assistance you can lend to me.

What OS are you running?

DrTCP is compatible with Windows 2000 & XP, But it will NOT work with Windows VISTA.

Hello,

It is XP.

By the way, what is RTFM?

Be sure to select your Ethernet NIC card in the 'Adapter Settings' Dropdown dialog in DrTCP before entering any changes, then hit 'Apply', then 'Exit'... Then Reboot the PC.

»Tweaking FAQ »DRTCP: How do I use it and what are all these settings?

If you have already done that, What specific changes didn't seem to "Take"?

("RTFM" = "Read The F[ine] Manual")...

Yes, DrTCP is reporting "SAVED" after saving the settings, and I'd rebooted the OS. (I'm trying to lower the RWIN setting to between 14520 and 37752 (something advised on the results page of the "Tweaking for speed" function.)

I've done the changes described above for Tcp Receive Window Settings (TRYING TO lower THE 'RWIN Settings' before choosing both 'Adapter Settings.'

There are two 'Adapter Settings': a. "1394 Net Adapter;"
and b. Realtek 8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC."

I'll try again to lower RWIN to 14520 for only the 'Realtek 8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC.'

Tcp Receive Window Settings do not "take"

+++ I'd just repeated the steps for '...Family Fast Ethernet NIC." Nothing.
The results of the last test are:

"1. Your Tweakable Settings
Receive Window (RWIN): 65535 •
Window Scaling: off
Path MTU Discovery: ON
RFC1323 Window Scaling: OFF
RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: ON
MSS requested: 1452
TTL:
(less any hops behind firewall)
130
TTL remaining: 114
TOS flags: none set"

Where can I read the "Fine Manual?" (I've never heard of it.)

Also, a couple of years ago, another expert successfully advised me to edit some log file with a command line command beginning with SOMEthing like "rtsh....." but i cannot find the precise text that worked then.

What TCP RWIN setting are you trying to set, and what setting is DrTCP reporting after saving the settings and Rebooting?

(Edit): If you are attempting to set your RWIN to a value larger than 65535, then you will also have to change the 'Window Scaling' dropdown selection in DrTCP to 'YES'.

Can you run a tweak test at »/tweaks and post the URL of the results page here.

What service do you have and what advertised speeds are you supposed to get? No need to lower under 65k nowadays. You should be fine with the XP default anyway.

Your tweak settings are fine and don't need to be lowered. Any issue you are having has nothing to do with your tweak settings.

What do you get at »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and run the Washington DC test at various times of the day?

Click for full size
Download CableNut from here »cablenut.com/

Use the settings in the picture.

Save, exit, reboot, retest.

Rerun the Tweak Test

Run Two Speed Tests from the two DIFFERENT cities nearest to you that are listed here: Speakeasy POPs

Also, test here »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512

Note your transfer rate after about 30 seconds. Then cancel the download.

Post the URL for the New Tweak Test. For the TWO Speakeasy Tests, Copy and Paste the speed results from those tests and note the speed from the FTP download test.

THANK YOU: Success! -- and speed is back up to between 1.1 and 1.2 Mbs. -- good enough!

The "ftp transfer rate" (»»ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512 ) is up from 123 Kbps. to 133 Kbps.

There's no way that change in RWIN made any difference. Switch it back to 65535, save and reboot and retest. If you're seeing any difference, there's an issue that is causing the performance problem and lowering the RWIN is just masking it.

Nope, not RWIN alone, as it was changed back to 65535, with Speakeasy still reporting 1+Mbs.

Could it have been one of the other ten adjustments.

Oh..., I now realize that I reran the Manual Tweak Screen with only DefaultReceiveWindow and TcpWindowSize changed back to 65535, while GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize remained 37752.

+++ New Information: +++ Earthlink said that there was "trouble" on the line from the "central office." Last night, at one point, the speed was measured at 2. kbps -- I'll conclude that they'd been working on it, as it is back to 1.1 Mbs. now. That low speed was after I moved GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize up to 65535. It is now back to 37752 along with Default-RW and TcpW-Size.
