Switch between 3G and EDGE

My iPhone 3G seems to have problems with switching between 3G and EDGE. I frankly don't have a problem with spotty 3G coverage, as long as the change is seamless.

For whatever reason, my iPhone will sometimes have zero 3G signal, then after 20 seconds or so, will switch to EDGE and have a full signal. I don't know why it takes so long for the switch, but it is annoying and hampers outgoing/incoming calls obviously.

I believe a lot of things will change when ATT rolls out 3G on 850. In the areas where penetration is clearly an issue (everyone dropping back to EDGE) this will help a great deal, even on so called 'weak' RF phones such as the iPhone.
