[iPhone] iPhone Has a Kill Switch!?!?

This is more than just heavy handed.

»news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20080811/tc_···1rcjtBAF

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the iPhone 3G has a kill switch that can remotely remove software from the devices.

Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that Apple needs the capability in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program -- such as an application that steals user's personal data -- to be distributed to iPhones through its App Store.

"Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," Jobs said.

Disagree with heavy handed assessment. #1. It hasn't been used. #2 if a malicious app is unleashed and Apple/AT&T doesn't have control then Apple is criticized for not protecting iPhone users, other mobile users and the Internet.

Lame excuse for killing "illegal" apps on jailbroken phones.

From my understanding, it's only for apps distributed thru the App Store, if they don't check an app thoroughly and it indeed does funny things.

They would have no way of knowing what's on your jailbroken iPhone outside of the App Store apps, unless they remotely scan the entire contents of the iPhone, and phone home. Now that would raise serious privacy hell.

I'm OK with this safety measure, provided that:

1. Apple provides an explanation why the app was removed.
2. Apple gives notice to users that have downloaded that app.
3. Apple refunds the purchase price if it was a paid app.

Hurray for wild speculation before anything even happens.

If MS did this, this thread would be at least 100 posts bitching about how evil they are.
