said by lev:No, it's not the phone. I've tested comparable phones on both networks with a friend in the past. At least in my area, Verizon's network outperforms AT&T, and the distortion I heard before the call dropped is something I'm used to hearing on the other end when I'm talking to someone who's on AT&T Wireless, even from a landline.
You can't win for losing though. As a moderator of an AT&T area, I used to get a lot of complaints that I was being pro-AT&T when I was reigning in senseless bashing, not to mention having someone from the site tell me that people have a right to complain.
Now I've got someone who doesn't know me from Adam telling me that I am bashing AT&T myself.
I report facts, buddy, and encourage the same in others. Now go do some research. I did.

edit: corrected spelling of reigning
I have to believe its a mix of the network and the phones. I have had AT&T in the Grand Rapids, MI area for years now, and never had any reception problems. With my Iphone, its the same thing. I get good service and performance from my phone. I couldn't be happier.
