The 2Wire MDC page for advanced firewall settings, at least from what I see in my browser, is at:

I notice that when I click the "submit" button on this page nothing seems to happen, whereas on other pages, such as the non-advanced firewall settings page, when I click "submit" there is clearly a data transmission occurring as a result. What serves the page in question: the 2Wire site, or my gateway? Is the problem with the page? If so, is it something I can fix, or is it 2Wire's server, and page, that needs attention???

Your modem/router holds the actual Internet IP, so it's actually irrelevant what firewall/antivirus settings are on your computer. The modem/router has to answer the ping, not your computer. :)

I just downloaded and ran the "Doctor Ping" executable ( »/beta/doctorping ), and got this not-so-good-sounding result:

"Sorry, 71 pings gave errors or timeouts. 79 from 103 IPs were reachable. - no record will be made."

I'm not quite sure what to make of this last bit!

If I un-check the 2 boxes as suggested and then leave the 2Wire MDC firewall advanced settings page and return to it, I find that the boxes are checked again!! (Yes, I clicked the "submit" button, and I've re-done this several times). The DSLReports line-quality test then fails, with msg "target IP does not respond to ICMP ping". This happens even if I keep the MDC page open while running the test. I've already confirmed that the WinXP firewall is still set to "allow incoming echo request".

I *am* able to run other DSLReports tests, such as the speed tests and the "Tweak Tester II" (except for the ICMP ping test, part 3 of the tweak test).

Suggestions?!? Do I need to also change something on the other MDC firewall settings page (not "advanced"), to allow an incoming app? (If so, which one? I don't see anything listed that is relevant, but I'm no pro at this stuff.)

I'm using Vista. I have no anti-virus. Windows firewall is on. Windows Defender found nothing.
