Have you ever posted in AT&T Direct: »/forum/sbcdirect?
They can check if there is an RT close to you. If there is one available, your loop could be transferred to it. This will involve a few days of DSL outage and a re-registration of your user ID after the DSL is back up, but once completed, you would be able to have faster speeds.
I'm not sure which [topic] to use when posting in Direct for an RT transfer request to get the correct attention to your thread. Maybe Prequal and a thread title of "Is there an available RT that I can transfer to?" |

need to run a new inside line strictly for the DSL and have them install a NID and splitter. this will eliminate the other inside wiring and solve some issues. but at 22k feet, you will likely never be perfect.

Yeah I know, my speeds are only 180kbps with att. That's the problem I have because getting cable is too expensive and I don't need speeds that high, but having DSL my speeds can only top out at 250kbps. I'm at two extremes with speeds, either I get 250kbps with DSL or 5000 with cable, there's nothing in-between and that's what I need.
Anyway, I've had 3 ISPs in the last 2 years and it's been the same problem so once again another reason for inside wiring. Let's not forget this house was built in the 50's and I have no idea how old the wiring is. |

If you are really 22000 feet from the CO, then you shouldn't even have DSL in the first place. That distance is too far by any standard to have reliable DSL and greatly exceeds AT&T's distance cut off limits.
A high open can also be on AT&T's portion of the wire pair and not just your inside wiring. |

the model is a Zyxel prestige 600 series.
Yeah I was afraid of that. The phone works ok most of the time (I do get occasional crackling) but when they test it, they hear no noise on the line and see the DSL is working so they won't look at anything that might be under the house or in the roof. I don't even know how it's wired. From the box outside it goes in somewhere in the roof (I assume) and then comes up from underneath the house.
I know that I am around 22000 feet from my CO also, but that wouldn't have anything to do with losing synch would it? I just get really slow speeds.
Another reason I highly suspect inside wiring somewhere is the fact that I have a filter, yet picking up the phone to get a dial tone makes the modem synch back on. This tells me it is probably a high open problem. |

Also, it might help if you don't mention that you're having problems with your DSL, and rather with your inside wiring.

What is the modem model? Some modems have info that can help diagnose inside wiring problems.
I'm pretty sure that an inside wiring insurance plan only covers POTS-type problems and not those specific to DSL. However, there are some POTS problems that also cause DSL problems. If you had a phone problem due to something in your inside wiring, fixing that might also fix the DSL. |

Thank you for that but I don't have an NID, it's one of those old boxes with no telephone wire plug-in. However the phone company has already checked that and said it's fine. No one wants to fix my inside wiring. The hard part about all of this is there's no way to know right away if it's been fixed because you have to wait an hour and see if it goes out. |

| I've been having trouble getting continuous synch from my DSL modem, and I highly suspect the problem is inside wiring. I am on the in-line home repair plan (about $8 a month) but everytime I get a repair person out here they always seem to find another reason for why it might be going out. Does this plan cover all inside wiring, and if they need to go in the roof/under the house is this going to cost me extra?
I'm thinking the home repair plan is not worth it. |
