Bummer. I have Optimum Online and usually get 4.2-4.4 so I guess I am lucky. From what I understand VoIP is difficult below 4.0. Had you tried different codecs (G.711 gives better voice quality than does G.729)?

Possibilities:

1) Port the number to CallCentric. (Also, if you wish, you can use their "call treatment" to forward your incoming to CallCentric's own fax server, while being able to use your outgoing as usual).

2) Port number to PhoneNumberBank.

3) Another option: sign up with myfax.com ($ 10/month) and port your number to them to receive your faxes. Then, for outgoing calls, set up low-cost service with either CallCentric or CallWithUs.

(Note that if you port your number to a fax service, you may have fewer rights trying to reclaim it. Porting is such sweet sorrow).

4) Or stay with VP's cheapest plan which is about $ 15 a month, in order to safely hold on to your 212 number while the industry works out their porting issues. Rules on porting do slowly seem to be getting better.

I don't really use VP for faxing I just have a number forwarded from VP to a K7.net fax service. Sorry to hear that. I have never used VP myself but their reputation has been very good as you know.

Curious if you tested your internet connection with something like www.testyourvoip.com to see if an ISP problem. VP would be more affected by that than OV.

Optimum Voice is indeed a great service (I do have one of their lines) but I wish it didn't cost so much.

The whole thing is weird, also, because if your VP line can carry fax, shouldn't it be even easier to carry plain voice?
