 Wash your hands

Techs can avoid cold/flu viruses by washing hands
Pat Vickers www.techrepublic.com

quote:
Techs are constantly touching other user's keyboards, mice, and phones. While this contact may seem harmless, I have always theorized that this interaction is the cause of many a support tech's misery during the cold and flu season. If I'm right, not only do support techs pick up cold and/or flu bugs from end users' peripherals, they also pass them to other keyboards and, therefore, to other people. I decided to investigate this, and here's what I found. [more]
Very good reading!!

I wash my hands several times a day,its good practice me thinks!!

Isnt this basic common sense? It's like touching doorknobs or holding onto the pole during a train ride. Been part of life for millions of years, and will continue to be so. If you wash your hands after working on someone's computer every time, youre going to wind up with all kinds of skin problems from the constant friction.

I do specifically wash my hands after working on a few computers here simply because of how horridly disgusting their keyboards and mice are, and I know Im actively touching their spit and phlegm. That's just fucking foul, and it continues to amaze me why no one ever sets a basic hygiene policy.

Many users would take that as an insult, even if its justified. They would then complain to their manager and your manager, and you would lose that battle in a second.

Is this proven by you or you're just speculating?

Proven!
Toll collectors who handled money, would wear gloves to keep from getting dirty hands from all the money they handled. People passing through would complain that they felt slighted by the collectors wearing gloves, insinuating they were afraid to touch them...

A guy I used to work with back in my tech support purgatory would bring those alcohol pads they use at clinics, and wipe down the keyboard, mouse, phone, headset, the buttons on the monitor, and even part of the desk. He also had a bottle of store-brand purell and kept rubbing his hands with it throughout the day. When he went to the bathroom, he would of course wash his hands, but he'd also use a towel to open the door, throwing the towel away on the way out.

He moved on to become a nurse.

I wash them when the user is sick or coughing/sneezing, or when it's one of those disgusting keyboards.

I didn't use to worry about it (beyond the normal wash your hands after using the washroom) until one day when I witnessed someone's coughing fit. All over the monitor and keyboard, I had to sit down at it still seeing the little speckles of phlem/spit on the monitor.

Was just gross me out.

Then I started using the storebrand purell 8)

Bottle of Purell in my cube.

I also do the "open the door with the paper towel" thing b/c I know people don't wash their hands after they use the bathroom. I don't know if it's something they teach the military in basic training or if they just forget, but I've seen it.

Once I saw a user leave the bathroom with out washing his hands I started gargling Purell.

Between a kid in daycare and working IT, it is a wonder how I ever stay healthy.

Well my mom taught me something even more useful then washing my hands too. She taught me not to piss on them 8) *snicker*

Over kill considering the crap the he is breathing in plus it is a great way to build super bacteria that is resistant to the germ killing stuff they put in those things.

Basic hygiene is one thing but constantly trying to sterilize everything makes things worse.

I do not care to much about germs but the crap you find when you clean out a keyboard is gross. I had one user that had a really bad dead skin and dandruff problem... lets just say I almost puked when I tapped the keyboard to clean it, I ended up throwing it in the garbage along with her mouse and chair.

I agree with Shark_615 See Profile, that is overkill. I ain't nobody's mammy or pappy so if they want the sh!t clean, I'll give them the alcohol wipes or something.

As for me, I usually wash my hands after touching people's kb's and mouse, cause I have seen some nasty sh!t. I had to throw away one keyboard of how dirty it was.

And yes, with all the health warnings and news, guys still don't wash their hands after using the bathroom , even after taking a sh!t . I always use my hand-dried towel to open the door. Even though I am told those hand sanitizers do work, I still can't get past the thought that I am putting chemicals on my hands, when using soap and water does the job.
