| Leaving guild. Take my share?
So i helped start a guild that cleared BT. I was a founding officer and put a lot of time in to it. I have not been active in the last two months and the other GM`s that i started the guild with have left and took a share of 5k gold with them from the bank. Do you guys think i should do the same and take my share of the bank? The bank has 40k gold and about 100k gold worth of stuff in it. |

Guild banks aren't an investment house to cash out when you leave.
In my humble opinion anyways. |

we broke up and the two bank managers got 5k since they did most of the work (me :P) and the few founding GM's/officers got 2.5k and everyone else got lutes and gold.
the guild before that i left without taking anything and in the end 2 people left with 25k...each..really pissed me off -- www.stopfcc.comI do not think the government needs to restrict free speech especially on a device that has an off knob. |

| reply to mythology I took about 6k gold worth of items. Shards, Gems, Hearts. Guess i am a ninja. Couple of hateful tells but other than that i should have enough gold to start me up when WoTlK comes out. Wont be long until ninja threads hit the malfurion forums. |

| reply to mythology I held on to my bank as my guild crumbled. I just cut off access to it and eventually everyone left the guild and I claimed all of the items for my new guild, which included only my alts. -- I'd take the time to insult your intelligence, but you probably wouldn't get it. |

| reply to mythology Take it all, mwahahahaha... seriously though, perhaps a few items if you've contributed to the guild isn't too much.
Put it this way, if there's going to be bad feeling about you leaving, that'll happen whether you take a few things with you or not. The only difference will be the degree of bad feeling and whether you'll get a few nasty comments about ripping off the guild (whether that's fair or not).
A few supplies and whatnot is one thing, and fair enough imo. All their epic gems, armor kits and so on? Not a great idea, but I reckon that's pretty obvious. |

4 edits | reply to mythology In my opinion no one, officer or not, should take money out of the guild bank, without specific permission, if they are leaving unless the guild is disbanning. Saying "I was an officer and put lots of work into it" is bullshit. Many members of a productive guild put tons of work into the guild bank either directly or indirectly. Most guild banks get their money from a combination of donations from guild members and from selling drops from raid runs.
If you have an expectation of being able to get back the money or items you put in to a guild bank when you leave the guild, then you should never put that stuff in the bank to begin with. Put it into your personal bank and it still belongs to you.
Putting something into the guildbank is a donation. Once you donate something it ceases to belong to you. I donated a couch to Goodwill a few years ago. They put it in their showroom and had it for sale. If I had gone in to the Goodwill store one day and walked off with the couch (yes I'm that strong ) I guarantee you the police would have had no hesitations in arresting me and the judge would would have convicted me of theft in a heartbeat.
I for one make regular contributions of gold and mats to my guild bank. I also participate in raids that produce the drops that produce the shards or AH fodder that ultimately turns into gold for the guild bank. That gold and that property (all the mats, recipes, food etc in the bank) belong to the guild as a whole, not to any one individual. If you leave the guild the price you pay is you loose your "equity" in this common property. Only when the guild disbands should the remaining "equity" be distributed among the members.
The fact is nothing in the guild bank belongs to you individually. It belongs to the guild as a whole. When you unilaterally decided to take a share of that equity you were stealing if you didn't have the prior permission of the guild.
I doubt anyone would think it was appropriate if a non-officer member raided the gbank prior to leaving so that he got what he thought he was entitled too. Why should it be any different when an officer leaves? Any member, officer or not, who did that in one of the top guilds on my server would probably be black listed from all the others.
Ohh and for the record- I was an officer in my last guild, I donated over 10K gold and additionally a ton of mats during my time in that guild. I also had a 95% attendance record for our raids. The guild bank had over 150K when I left and shit piles of mats. I could have taken it all with my access privilidges. I didnt take a single copper. It didn't belong to me, it belongs to my ex-guild and I'm not a thief. -- Hanging with my Gnomies |

| reply to mythology Seen this many times in WOW. My first guild the leader "quit" playing. We then found his character on ebay with the whole guild bank for like $5000. We reported it to Blizzard, got him banned and the got nothing for it lol. I had already been keeping alot of the drops from raids for myself so when he left I felt pretty good about it
There was also a major raid guild on my server, they were ahead of all the other guilds that did the same. 5 of their officers decided to transfer and join Death and Taxes so they took the guild bank with them and left the guild. 2 weeks later D&T fell apart. |

| reply to P Ness said by P Ness :said by JIGA :WoW is serious business. Don't be a theif in WoW! hard to be a theif when you had ownership in said bank items I own stock in a few companies, so I have ownership in those companies. But, if I take a computer worth even less than the value of my stock from one of those companies, I'm still a theif.
Obviously though the analogies on this topic will all be flawed and won't apply directly. Life does not equal WoW. But the ideas behind the analogies, and the surrounding ethical dilemmas can be transferred. So yes, you are not legally a theif when you steal from your guildmates in WoW. But ethically, is it much different? -- Hanging with my Gnomies |

| reply to mythology When you put something in a community bank it is no longer yours. It belongs to the community, or guild in this case.
But, you already stole it, so it doesn't matter.
One thing I want to point out though, why do people always say "life does not equal wow" and "I don't care what one person to another does in a video game" (I read that last one as what one person does to another person)
You are right. Life is greater than wow, but that doesn't mean you are any less horrible if you do mean things to someone because it's a video game. People are people, whether they are standing in front of your face or anonymous on a computer thousands of miles away. |
