[Connectivity] Connecting to family's internet connection via VP

Hello,

I am traveling abroad but I would like to access internet content (limited to US IPs) via my broadband connection at home (in the US). I believe the best method would via a VPN connection.

If I understand correctly, a computer at my home must be turned on and connected to the internet in order for me connect through it to my ISP in the US. Right? (I can't just connect to my ISP via its IP when away from home.)

Also how do I find the IP (of my computer at home or my ISP) to enter it in the XP VPN setup on my laptop that I have with me?

Any help would be appreciated.

Right, you'll need to have a computer in the U.S. always turned on and connected to the Internet so you can connect via VPN.

The easiest way to to the IP is to sign up for free at no-ip.com and then use their program that will update your IP to a hostname you created. This way, when you want to connect to VPN, you just the same hostname, as the IP it points to is automatically updated.

While I am by no means knowledgeable about VPN I believe that a properly configured VPN capable router is all that you would need connected to your connection. So long as that router supports your chosen IP forwarding solution. (NO-IP.com, DYNDNS.com etc)
EDIT to add- No computer running needed.

I have some domain names, a DNS, and a web host. Could I use that? I don't want to run up the bandwidth.

Are these slow (NO-IP.com, DYNDNS.com etc)? I tried playing around with IPs with Charon, IP blockers, etc. They were too slow be of any use.

Also where would I find the static/dynamic IP of my home broadband account (Comcast)? I need to know what to tell the folks to look for at home.

No, he will still need a PC to talk to. What he probably needs is a program such as PC Anywhere to let him control the home PC. That way his laptop ill show the same screen as the home PC and it will be just as though he was at the home machine.

If you're going to watch anything live, remember that the bandwidth is doubled - once coming in to the home PC and once giong back out to you.

Thank you.

It seems pointless.--Too much hassle for what it is worth. I wanted to watch NBC's Olympic coverage. I missed the opening ceremonies and NBC has VOD but it is restricted to the US only.
