 DIR-655 QoS / DMZ question

Scenario…
You have a device (a VOIP modem for instance) connected to the router. And lets say you have the QoS engine enabled for this device with the highest priority. Now you decide to run this same device in DMZ…
Will doing this bypass the routers QoS Engine?

I seem to get conflicting answers to this. I know it depends on the particular implementation of D-Links DMZ. Any input is appreciated!

Yes, it absolutely does depend on D-link's implementation, however, in the truest sense, putting a device in the DMZ merely means you're removing the firewall protection from that device and exposing it and all it's ports to the outside world: the internet.

QOS is something else entirely. It is the packet shaping algorithms used to keep network traffic flowing efficiently based on a users' needs for their network devices.

It is entirely possible that D-link programmed the router in such a way that putting a device in the DMZ causes it to also not be affected by QOS rules. I suppose you could spend some time and find out through observations and trial and error.

Thanks for the input bripab! I am aware of the definition of each but it was wise of you to advise me of them just in case. I have been on the bleeding edge of network security for many years now. I myself work on the hardware end of things. I consulted some of my fellow software engineers and did not get a satisfactory answer. I even asked D-Link and came away from the conversation feeling I knew more about their device then they did. Ultimately I believe you are correct. The only way I will know is to do a little testing on my own. Off to get the latest version of Wireshark…
