Important info for areas like mine that are served by Translators, due to our being over 100 miles north of the Bay Area towers and our rugged terrain-

"A TV translator station rebroadcasts the programs of a full-power TV broadcast station. Translator stations typically serve communities that cannot receive the signals of free over-the-air TV stations because they are too far away from a full-power TV station or because of geography (such as uneven terrain or mountains). Many translator stations operate in mountainous or more remote areas of the country.
Low-power television (LPTV) stations usually provide a locally-oriented or specialized television service in the communities they serve. These communities may be in rural areas or may be individual communities within larger urban areas."
Our Translator will continue to broadcast in Analog after the Febuary date, so if you get a Converter Box here it HAS to have a Analog Pass-Through so you can continue to watch the stations until the they finally switch over to digital-
"Important - About Digital TV! DO NOT WORRY! You will not be affected by digital TV changes right away. We will still transmit in analog.
However, you should still purchase a DTV conterter box using the DTV coupons ($40) from the government because eventually we will transmit DTV signals. If you wait until next year, the coupons may no longer be available. And note: you must buy a DTV converter that has analog pass-through in order to receive all TIA stations! It's not as hard as it sounds... read DTV on TV Translators to find out more.
It has yet to be determined how many stations we will be able to receive once the switch has been made to DTV."

So, if want Digital TV here, you will have to rely on cable or satellite until the Translator here does go to digital, and like it says many, including the one here will continue to broadcast in analog well after the Feb date.
Edit-A current list from the TIA site of converter boxes that have analog pass-through
"Bringing you free TV for over 50 Years... DTV Converters with Analog Pass-Through According to the NTIA.gov website, these digital TV (DTV) converters (set-top boxes) will work with analog TV translators such as those used by TIA. You should only purchase converters listed here, or you may have problems receiving our channels.

It's VITAL to find out if you are served by a translator, and if they will continue to transmit in analog after the Feb date or not, if they will you MUST get a converter box with an analog pass-through or you will LOSE your tv for quite a while.
A list of stations served by our Translators-
Station Guide Station TIA Notes FOX 2 39 full power NBC 3 41 full power (interference) CBS 5 43 full power ABC 7 45 full power PBS 9 51 full power PBS 9 47 low power (temporary) KRON 4 31 full power KFTY 50 17 full power (DTV analog) PBS 22 21 low power (temporary) NOT TIA 19 This signal is not from TIA. (Black) 44 This interfering signal is not from TIA. We have requested the FCC fix the problem.
If you are watching a station on a different number (ie.NBC 3 in that list comes in on Channel 41 on your TV), then you are served by a translator.
This is a list of Converter Boxes, the ones with the asterisk (*) are analog-pass through equipped. »https://www.ntiadtv.gov/cecb_list.cfm
