Yes - this is a drag. Their quality is excellent and it does "just work".
I am planning on staying with them until they tell me to go away.
As a side note, we are testing the T-Mobile service and it does work fairly well...

| reply to JD Glad my 2 year Cingular/AT&T Wireless completed it's term four months ago. When CallVantage goes away, I'll probably move to T-Mobile faves and their @Home voip service.
AT&T doesn't have to worry about competition, they do a fine job on their own driving customers away. |

| reply to Mons00n1 Yep,
Its not all over and bad yet... But we can hear the rattle.
I am going to hold on to my CallVantage service as long as its available. I hope that they don't transition us anywhere.
Hopefully our ATA's will be providing dial tone for at least another year before its just an over sized paperweight.

| reply to sullim4 said by sullim4 :Yeah, this is unfortunate. AT&T had a good thing going here. I switched from Vonage about 9 months ago thinking they'd be the ones going under... hah! Guess I got that one wrong. Well, there is a difference between 'going under' and a business decision to discontinue a product. As mentioned earlier in the thread (and the news release), nothing at this time impacts current customers. Maybe we can call still hear the death rattle, but also as mentioned earlier in the thread, it's highly doubtful that ATT will NOT give CallVantage customers plenty of options for an orderly transition out of the service when they do decide to pull the plug. |

| reply to djrobx There are a couple: - The default is to dial out on the landline instead of the bluetooth connection. This means that you need to prefix each call you want to make from the cell connection with #1# and suffix it with #.
- All # presses are captured by the box, meaning that automated systems that require you to press this button don't work properly. You need to use your cell handset to make those calls.
Otherwise, it does the job quite well. Voice quality is actually better than my cell - but I chalk that up to the poor earpieces they're putting in slimmer cell handsets. |

1 edit | reply to NY Tel Which is fine, except
1) UV-Voice is twice the price 2) UV-Voice isn't even available to all U-Verse customers, let alone all the other customers they have on CV.
I'm guessing a lot of this has to do with new U-verse customers like me picking up CV when migrating over from a cable triple play package. AT&T wants to be able to show investors strong adoption numbers for the U-verse product as they roll things out, and CV might be getting in the way.
UV-Voice is also too expensive. Price wise, it *seems* on-par with cable, except cable tends to offer bundle discounts that UV doesn't. On Time Warner, bundle pricing brings it down to $25. And it also seems they expect existing UV customers to pay steep $95 install charge.
I'm really not sure what I'm going to do.

For those of you thinking of going all-cell, you might want to pick up one of these:

I bought one at Fry's last weekend, and aside from a few quirks, I'm quite impressed so far. |

I wonder if the business unit of the old AT&T is still taking orders or have they also stopped taking new orders? The plan was (right after SBC bought them) was to launch Uverse------>Let the 2 services run simultaneously--------->Uverse replaces Callvantage.
They planned it a long time ago. |

| reply to watts3000 No reason to switch anywhere at this point. They haven't sent a 'service going away' email, so I'm staying put. The service works well, sounds great, and this is the first day that most (if not all) of us have heard that ATT is not taking new CallVantage customers.
I see no harm in looking around--check out other providers, see which service(s) will best fit your needs. Just keep in mind that once you cancel your CV account, it's now gone for good.
Were I to get notification TODAY that I had to make a decision quickly (I'm sure ATT would give us at least a month, if not several months), I'm not sure what I'd do. At worst, I'd port back to POTS to have a 'safe haven' for my number until I found which VoIP service to point it to. The thought of a remote call forward POTS line is attractive, except that our CID wouldn't match our number (with most VoIP providers, anyway).
Point is, I'm going to enjoy CallVantage as long as they continue offer it to existing customers. In the 4 years I've had the service, it's been rock solid. |

| reply to JD Well I think I will be going to cell only also I guess I know will look at actually getting a nice smart phone the 25.00 I was payting ATT can go toward a data plan. I really hate to see it go the call quailty was great however I may check out voip with my cable provider but most likely will go all cell. So what do you guys think of Vonage I've always heard the quality was no where as good as callvantage? |

| reply to Mons00n1 Wow...
This is a very sad day. I was hoping that this would not happen for at least a few more years. I guess CallVantage really is going to migrate out to another platform. I am not sure how long this will take before they start sending current users a letter about either disconnecting or transfering to another platform, but this is definatley the first, if not the first, second and third nail in the coffin....
I will miss CallVantage when its gone..... |

He did also confirm that current customers can add/remove services, just not place new orders.
Thus you could still add a second line, softphone etc... |

| reply to Mons00n1 I seriously doubt AT&T wants to lose a bunch of phone customers, I doubt they'll just shut down the existing service. They will probably try to migrate us to something else.
CallVantage seems to be a very popular choice amongst U-verse users. The topic comes up frequently in U-Verse forums, partly because of AT&T's own sluggishness in releasing U-Verse Voice. I bet the bean counters at AT&T don't like that one of AT&T's own products is undercutting the price of U-Verse Voice by half. -- Laser eye surgery rocks! I love frickin' laser beams. |

I've been happy with the service and don't want mine to go away!
But I do expect that any such move would be done in plenty of time to allow customers to port their numbers to the new provider of choice. The question is whether that would move me to only use my * system at home (which so far has been more of a hobby than a 'necessary' item) or try another provider.
But since I know I wouldn't be able to go BACK to CallVantage, I'm not making any move to leave, unless I have to. |
