| Which Free A/V ?
Don't want to start a debate on this one.
I have a box sitting on my desk from a lady who can't afford jack right now. Scanning thru her files, her A/V subscription has expired, so I was going to toss a freebie version on for her. It's a newer box with XP sp2 on it. I don't want to be constantly helping her with it, so hoping you could recommend which free A/V to use, that is simple and easy to use. I was looking at AVG or Avira, tho I have never used either. Is there better reliability and less cons, to one or the other? Thanks |

When I posted above, I was under the impression that AVG had a free version, not just a trial. Seems that has changed? |

| reply to Candoo3 On tests I recall, Avira tested slightly ahead of AVG. Here's the morst recent I have a saved link to: »www.wilderssecurity.com/showthre···t=205507 There is an excellent tutorial available for Avira on it's installation and use here: »www.techsupportforum.com/content···/64.html. -- Proud ASAP member since 2005 |

There is a free Kaspersky AntiVirus Removal Tool, but it's not an antivirus replacement as it doesn't provide real-time scanning. To emphasise that, after running it asks if you want to uninstall it. -- Proud ASAP member since 2005 |

2 edits | reply to Candoo3 Until version 7 came along, Avira used to be tested on a Pentium I, so they go out of their way to keep it light and fast. I never had a problem with Avira, I heard AVG has gotten heavy and clunky, Avast I've tried and found a little annoying and the registration requirement was also a turn off. According to the AV test/comparisons, Avira is coming out better then AVG and Avast.
My vote is for Avira! But since they are all fee... try them all! |

@covad.net | reply to Candoo3 I like to install AVG Free version for people who aren't too bright, since it is almost completely automatic. I have it installed on 2 of mine, no problems with version 8. Nobody called me either to complain that their computer doesn't work. |

| reply to peter_m I've installed Avira and it *seems* ok, less the initial nag screen. It seemed to scan the drives fairly quick. It found nothing but there was 1 warning, but I couldn't figure out how to see what it was for. It didn't specify in the log either. As long as it does what it's suppose to, that will probably work.
I finally was able to find the free AVG, at least I guess it was legit. I couldn't find it directly on the Grisoft site. I'm going to install that one tomorrow, and try a few nasties, to see if it catches them.
Avast looks cool, as long as she figures out how to use it with the interface. She's good people, just very computer illiterate.
Thanks for the suggestions. |

2 edits | reply to Candoo3 Edit: Was going to recommend Avira, but I see the choice has been made. Candoo3 if you search the Wilders forums you can find info about the nag screen and how to make it less intrusive. |
