| [rant] Dead iMac g5 rev b bulging capacitor
as the title states I have an iMac g5 with a bulged capacitor so it has no video output other than a scrambled screen now I am out of warranty as I purchased in 05 with now applecare but seriously mad that I have a paper weight on my desk. I took it it to the apple store and they were no help they told me I would have to purchase a new logic board for $769 + $80 for labor now should I call customer relations or should I just suck it up and let it be. ? |

1 edit | reply to hkellogg There is one sentence that everyone seems to miss in the REP, which states,
"the repair will be covered by Apple for up to three years from the original date of purchase even if your iMac G5 is out of warranty. "
EDIT: what store did you bring it to? |

4 edits | Is the capacitor in a spot and large enough to replace ourself? Just go to a local electronics shop, buy and solder it in. They're certainly cheap enough to give it a try before ponying up a zillion for a board that cost more than the machine is worth.
For what it's worth, I had a 900MHz G3 iBook with a notorious logic board problem (bad video) and with kind begging mentioning it had been intermittent for a while they replaced it free 3 months outside the 3 year limit of the then logic board replacement program. Kind begging and pleading poverty while pointing out that video issue warranty extension program (the one you're outside of) is also worth another shot. |
