Criminals have now gone 'vishing'

You receive an e-mail from PayPal asking you to call. Your account has been compromised. Or, a company you don’t know calls threatening collection. It’s scary. Before you give out any personal data, there’s something you should know.

You could be the target of vishing, or voice phishing. It’s the latest twist on phishing scams.

Phishing attacks rely mostly on e-mail. You receive a message purportedly from a bank or a store. A problem with your account requires immediate attention.

Age is a very high price to pay for my maturity. If I can't stay young, I can at least stay immature!

Scams by phone long predate the Internet. I don't really think we need a new catch phrase for it, even if it's perpetrated via VoIP.

Yes, phone scams have been around for some time. The newer twist is that the original email is a phish with the attendant faked company or government logos and home page. instead of(or in addition to) providing a fake link, they provide a phone number or a fake customer service line.

A 2006 topic here briefly discussed vishing, so a reminder is in order. »Internet Con Artists Turn to "Vishing"

I've found a quick Google of a suspicious phone number often turns up other scams in which the number was used.

Those look like VOIP numbers. They come back to Level3 or Global Crossing. The people at the other end of those numbers are probably overseas.

Yes, but the new catch phrase is, um, catchy.

I'm going to invent "pishing".
Better stand back.

There's also cellphone phishing, as noted here: »Cellphone Phishing
