Found this solution on the yahoo answers forum from member intc_escapee and it worked for me:

1) go to »www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update
2) make a directory on your desktop called AVG
3) download AVI: 270.6.4
4) download IAVI: / 1616
5) move the dowloaded files to the directory you made called AVG
6) launch AVG
7) select tools -> update from directory
8) select the directory called AVG where you put the downloads

That's it. Should be fixed.
OMG!!! THAnK YOU!!! I almost re installed windows thinking I had corupted it. I'm glad I checked this forum first! This fix works, don't re-install.

Is this problem with version 8 only? I am using 7.5.524 and I have not had a problem at all.

Thanks for the manual update solution.

Funny to see the directory vs. folder debate again -- it's been so long. If you're old enough to remember DOS, then you remember the "dir" command that showed you a list of all the files in a dir-ectory. Not sure who came up with "folders" first, Apple or MS. My guess is Apple, with the first real GUI and the cute idea of making an icon that looks like a paper file folder and having it represent a directory.

Ahh, life before GUIs and mice.

OMG !! Thank you for all the info on this issue I tried what ygraft suggested and now my avg is up and running . I have a question. Do I need to keep the AVG folder on my desktop now that the program is working properly ? Again Kudos !
