mrcamp : It should work without any problems. I am also in a 3 floor house. My wireless modem comes into the house via the basement. That's also where my router is. So, I just plugged the vonage router (v-portal)into one of the ports on my router and plugged one end of phone cord into the v-portal the other end into one of the phone jacks in the basement. That automatically supplied connection to all the phone jacks in the house. Even sending and receiving fax works without adjusting anything.
--
So Much trouble in the world...Bob Marley

Mediocrates : Two ways. One is getting a multi handset + base station wireless phone. Don't scrimp, get a really good one. Two is following Vonage instructions for plugging your TA into your home's phone wiring complex. The second method would of course require that your cable breakout/modem + TA is somewhere very close to ANY RJ-11 wall jack. Otherwise you're going to have some messy phone wire running from one to the other. The phones in the wall jacks can, as far as I know, be any kind of phone including wireless handsets.

Your other questions.

A V-Portal works 100% behind a router w/o opening any ports or port forwarding or port triggering or placing the TA in a DMZ. Moreover I do not think I have a static IP address assigned to it either. If I remember correctly it's DHCP which is how the V-Portal starts up on its own.

Caller ID works on the TA, and if your phone handset supports it, on the phone handset or base station as well. At least my GE phones do.

Your questions are like the ones I asked before signing up.

For me, Vonage works fine behind my router but caused trouble when installed between the modem and the router. Using one of the ethernet ports on your WiFI access port should work. While I have not tried it, you are supposed to be able to connect the Vonage box to your house phone lines so you can continue to use your hard-wired phones. (My phones are wireless, so the base station is plugged into the Vonage box). You have to disconnect your house phone wires from the world to do this.

Caller ID works on all my phones.
nixen : I'm thinking about getting Vonage service, but I'm concerned that I wouldn't actually be able to use it.

I live in a three floor home. My broadband comes into my house in my basement. That's where my MODEM, my firewall and my primary Ethernet switch is. I have one Ethernet run up to the main floor that feeds a WiFi access point (an 802.11g access point with 5 Ethernet ports).

I have a standard phone in my kitchen and living room on the main floor of the house and phones in each of the bedrooms on the top floor of the house. I need to be able to provide service to those four phones (or, at least, be able to provide phone service to those four areas).

Any ideas how I would do this?

Also, given that I already have a firewall device, would I be able to run the Vonage adapter behind it? It seems the Vonage site assumes that the Vonage adapter runs as your router.

As a side note: is the Vonage adapter the only device that's capable of the Caller-ID functions, or would any normal phone device behind it/plugged into it also be able to extract Caller-ID information?
--
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell
