DSL or Cable for online gaming?

I was wondering, what is the best connection for online PC and PS3 gaming? I have DSL right now and Cable temporary but i heard cable lags alot...

Input your thoughts please...

Thanks

I don't think it really matters.

It may vary based on provider and area. When I had DSL and cable HSI at the same time, it seemed cable had lower ping times to most places.

You may wish to investigate to see if PPPoE (if you are using it for your DSL) has any effect on gaming. Some in the Comcast HSI forum report very low ping times, others very high to the same sites. I'd suspect the same thing is true of DSL users across the nation.

If you currently have both services, test them out. In my particular case, cable was a bit better than DSL as my VOIP provider pings were reliably faster on cable. To me less delay on a VOIP connection meant a better solution to my problem.

It honestly depends on who your provider choices are and your location. Not all territories, nor providers, are created equal. One that may be known for poor service in one locale may be excellent in another.

Neither, Fiber is!

Honestly though, it doesn't matter these days with either, just check up on the providers near your area.

I will reiterate as others have done - it will depend. I use DSL but TW is *very* inconsistent in my area. I use DSL without PPPoE and 1.5 meg down - 384 up and have no issues - even being just over 12K feet from the CO.

I've used both. Verizon DSL 3/768k, and now with cable 8/512k. Both provided the same performance really. My pings are better with Cable, roughly around 25ms, but DSL was almost as solid. Who told you that cable lags a lot? There is a lot of things that could cause lag. Static on the line, low power levels, severe node congestion, P2P apps running, malware/adware........etc As far as PPPoE it never had any effects on my DSL line, we just switched because of price to speed ratio.

it depends on the provider. How well do they manage their network, how congested your area is. What do they peer to.

From my own experience if I had to be blindfold and pick I'd pick DSL if only because of the number of times I've found congestion at peak hours with cable.

DSL at least tries to sell you a speed, up and down. Cable tends not to talk too much about speed.. yeah they are typically faster but since they don't sell based on speed they don't have to jump when speeds drop. And if speeds drop, ping tends to turn high or go lossy.

Once again, as everyone else has said...it all depends on the provider.

I have Comcast and AT&T DSL in my area, and both are awesome. I get identical pings for both connections for the most part. The latency is very low. I couldn't ask for better.

If you want the best line, I would ask your neighbors and people on your street what they have. Ask if they have problems with their connections. Ask if they like them and if so why. Get one of these connections and try it out.

If you have DSL now, what is your online gaming experience like? Do you like it? Hate it? If you have a DSL provider that we have a forum for, have you tried visiting it to ask questions there?

I know, a lot of questions but that is how I would approach this.

DSL

Agree with pretty much what has already been said.

You don't "notice" the ping irregularities as much with the console's as you do with the PC. PC's generally give you an actual number and not some ambiguous colored lights.

Providers around me offer a 30 day money back policy if you don't want the service. Should take advantage of that if your providers offer that and test yourself.

I personally use Comcast Cable and have no lag issues, very low ping for West Coast servers.
