Website blocking purposes only.<br><br>I merge The Spybot S&D hosts file with those of Malwaredomainlist and Malwareblocklist and use HostsXpert to manage it. About 19000 entries currently.<br><br>Maybe, I'm a fool but, I subscribe to the notion that if everyone blocked internet advertising, much of the "free" content would no longer be so. For me a hosts file is another layer of security.<br><br>Plus, some of them there ads got some damn fine looking women!]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/618942"><b>bobince</b></A> : Yes, for some internal hostnames, and to block some particularly obnoxious advertisers that make sites I commonly use slow to load.<br><br>Blocking malware by hostname is an admirable idea, but when the file gets hundreds of K long and most of the domains are old ones (now inactive and replaced by the dozens of new malware domains registered every day) it's just not practical.<br><br>Blocking known-bad netblocks still does quite well, since they move less. I'd also be interested in tactics like blocking all hostnames registered with or with DNS served by known-bad registrars like Esthost/Estdomains, though that would require some lengthier whois lookups.]]></description>

For me, the method became self-defeating as far as system performance was concerned.<br><br>The most important reason I have never gone back to using HOSTS is the fact that there were and are better ways to do this:<br><br>PROX<br>Restricted zones<br>AD BLOCK in FF<br>SPYWARE BLASTER<br>Better firewalls<br>Etc, Etc, Etc...<br><br>Mike]]></description>
