I merge The Spybot S&D hosts file with those of Malwaredomainlist and Malwareblocklist and use HostsXpert to manage it. About 19000 entries currently.

Maybe, I'm a fool but, I subscribe to the notion that if everyone blocked internet advertising, much of the "free" content would no longer be so. For me a hosts file is another layer of security.

I used the Gorilla and Steve Martin HOSTS back in my W9x days but stopped using them when they started getting too heavy. For me, the method became self-defeating as far as system performance was concerned.

The most important reason I have never gone back to using HOSTS is the fact that there were and are better ways to do this:

PROX
Restricted zones
AD BLOCK in FF
SPYWARE BLASTER
Better firewalls
Etc, Etc, Etc...

I use HostsMan and only have 17 entries. I use the Hosts file to block things such as this site trying to send information to Google Analytics and to stop Mozilla from spying on me (their revised privacy policy sucks). I also use it to block searchportal.com from taking over if I mistype a url.

I use the one that came with the operating system, and perhaps add one or two local hosts for convenient reference (but with their correct IP address, not an attempt to block).

Would never consider it - in the way some may add thousands of URLs to a list.

Possibly for specific limited circumstances. Like when an address has changed, but not yet propagated through DNS.
