We do not have iphones, but our TILTs are having problems connecting.

The last call i made to ATT they said it was a network problem...wide spread.

(I wish the first tech new of the problem with out having to call again!!)

justin : no wifi has to be a red herring, if you remove the sim card or turn the cellular part off then the phone is the same as it was yesterday, when it could connect to wifi.

I thought I read or heard somewhere that this outage is supposed to last until 9 PM EST, might be wrong, i've been on hold with support for about 45 minutes now, i'm sure they're getting hammered right now.

No WiFi? That's not right.. there's something else wrong there. WiFi problems should be separate from any network problems. WiFi works perfectly fine here... but EDGE/3G are toast. Sucks.

Sunday/Monday 3G was being really whacky too.. I'd use Maps and it would load about 50% of the map, leaving out random squares. It would just never finish loading the map. Then I switched to EDGE and everything loaded in just fine.

I thought things would get better. Instead they're just getting worse.. I have a feeling this may have to do with the ridiculous number of iPhone 3G's being sold. It must. What's the last time a phone came out that made using wireless/cell data access THIS easy, intuitive AND desirable? Lots of people getting iPhones... lots of people logging on... I wonder if AT&T (or anyone else, for that matter), ever planned for this kind of interest in wireless data access on the go.

Meh.. come to think of it, I'm probably very wrong about this. I'm underestimating cell service providers' ability to plan ahead and build strong networks that can handle lots and lots of data being transferred by lots and lots of people. Further, I realize I'm basically suggesting that the iPhone 3G is single-handedly bringing down AT&T's networks... while the iPhone *is* a popular device, I'm not sure it's gotten quite to THAT point yet.

kfsutops : I just bought a 3g and upgraded to 2.0.2. No problems at all. Works pretty good.

I will say that I understand why some people have problem with the 3g part. I don't get nearly as good a signal as I did with the 1st generation. I haven't dropped any calls. But the signal isn't all that great. The 3g speeds are ok. Better than Edge, but not as good as I would have thought.

As I said in another post. I receive MUCH better 3g coverage and speeds with my old Blackjack last year.

anon : I just upgraded to 2.02. Everything was fine until I tried running 3rd party apps. The apps would show the startup screen, and then quit! This was happenning to all the apps. (Note that Apple's own apps were fine).

I tried uninstalling one of the apps and downloading it from the appstore again and installing it. After that, it worked again. And all my other apps started to work as well!

I figured it could have been some outdated, shared, library references that the apps were still holding on to, and once one of the app refreshes the reference, all the other apps will too.

illJazz : I restored my phone for the first time (ever!) Friday morning, and the texting issues are gone completely, which is very strange. It's possible that there was a coincidence and that AT&T fixed their network overnight and that I am now stuck thinking it was the restore..

Find the ipsw file then right click on Restore in iTunes with the phone connected of course. Then select the ipsw file, it will take it from there, very easy....

If you call my cell phone between 4-6 pm you are more than likely going to get a message that my number is no longer in service. I don't know why. AT&T has no freaking clue why. It doesn't matter which phone I am using. It's hit and miss whether you get me or not.

AT&T sucks big time. I'm not excusing Apple on any of this. I think they have screwed the pooch on this too.

BKuhl : This update has been a nightmare for me. Having the first gen and then upgrading to the 3G no past update has caused me much concern.

Now, there are some cell towers which my phone refuses to communicate with. I can predict exaclty when I can and cannot get access during my commute.
Now to top that off. Some applications refuse to update through iTunes. I seem to have found a workaround for this also, but OMG what next!?

illJazz : Uh.. so two friends today have confirmed that my voicemail is not set up. I didn't have it set up for a while, but then I recorded a message and put it up. The message is still there and I can play it back when I go to the visual voicemail tab. Yet people who call and get to voicemail get the message about voicemail not being set up. I suppose I'll set it up again.

Second, I texts I receive reach me with a HUGE delay suddenly. I just did a test with a friend.. she sent me a text at 10:28pm, I received it a whopping 14 minutes late, at 10:42pm. What the hell is up with that??

This is seriously whacky. A phone restore may be in order.

HiVolt : Well thats stupid. I liked that feature, it worked well for me. I hadn't had any issues updating apps from the iPhone, as I don't sync it often, once every 3-4 days so most of the updates I do on the iPhone itself.

Titus Pullo : Yes, as someone said above, Apple is at the mercy of everyone else making flaky equipment, apps, etc, that has Apple engineers now clamoring to implement kludges that fix the mistakes of others. This, amazingly enough, includes Apples own products which no longer work with the previous kludges that must have been lost in the upgrade cycle because flaky 3rd party devices, apps, etc, that worked fine before no longer work fine. So ... it's always someone else's fault if we never admit we do something wrong. The keyword is 'never'.

The Contacts App was initially fast after the update but has all but started freezing on launch again for me.
I'm now getting many more dropped calls and having Bluetooth issues.
Bluetooth issues are mainly to do with Audio Quality. People I talk to are suddenly complaining that they can't hear me for a few seconds then it clears up. This didn't happen with 2.0.1.
After the 2.0.2 update, the SMS App crashed at opening.
I haven't had any web pages crash on me in Safari like I did before but time will tell.
Wi-Fi seems more flaky but I need to do more testing. Seems like more drop outs and failed connections, especially Auto IP.

bbarrera : depends on the definition of "it starts up from where it left off" -- from my perspective the Apple apps are just saving state and provide the illusion of returning where left off, however some apps (e.g. iPod, Mail) never completely exit unless you hold the home button for 6 seconds.

The 3rd party apps completely exit and save state, so depending on the app may not be able to return "where it left off"

edit: note the quote you provided is not referencing the 6 second home button quit app action.

The iPhone has 128MB of what is basically RAM. Apps like aurora feint fill that space promptly. When you hit the home button many of the registers are not emptied. After everything is up and running about 50% of RAM is already used and reserved by the OS and Apple apps, leaving about 50% or less of RAM available for 3rd party apps. Yes there is virtual-memory, however there is no effective way to implement swapping to disk when the disk is flash memory. As justin stated when an 3rd party app exits it releases RAM and optionally may write data to flash.

Apple applications like phone, iPod, Mail, etc, are capable of running in the background. These applications can demand more RAM and take away from 3rd party apps.

the iphone is a somewhat stripped down OSX running on a mobile chip with less memory than a Mac, and probably no paged virtual memory support, true, but otherwise the same principals apply. I remember from my jailbroke 2g phone I could use "top", ps aux, etc. An application only takes resources if it is running & Aapstore apps do not get to run in the background nor can they patch the OS (otherwise chaos would ensue and we'd be back to the days of palm pilot instabilities). Some apple apps run all the time and of course there is a suite of daemons that run all the time.

But for the 2.x iphone OSX to not recover memory used when an app is used then killed seems strange.

This is interesting indeed. I second the question of why apps don't take all their crap with them once they're closed/die. They should, that's for sure. Why do pieces of what they used in memory remain there?

Registers refer to memory. Although the iPhone runs some form of OS X, there is code at the very bottom of the architecture that is implemented in machine language, as is true for anything that uses computer chips. Here's a Wikipedia quote on it that may or may not help understand it:

"The memory data register (MDR) is the register of a computer's control unit that contains the data to be stored in the computer storage (e.g. RAM), or the data after a fetch from the computer storage. It acts like a buffer and holds anything that is copied from the memory ready for the processor to use it.

The memory data register is half of a minimal interface between a microprogram and computer storage, the other half is a memory address register.

Far more complex memory interfaces exist, but this is the simplest that can work."

In other words, it's the simplest possible implementation of computer memory. Mobile devices especially rely more heavily on this concept because their hardware resources are extremely limited.

Mchart : The iPhone has 128MB of what is basically RAM. Apps like aurora feint fill that space promptly. When you hit the home button many of the registers are not emptied. So the more apps you run, the slower the phone will get as there is less and less RAM. Eventually your phone will hard-lock, or apps will start crashing because nothing is left. There is no page-file/virtual-memory system in place - So as I said, the 128MB of what is basically RAM gets filled quite fast.

The hold down the home button 'trick' is not a trick at all. It is simply force-closing the app and junking any associated registrar calls.

So if that releases memory, then there is a memory hog issue with the 3g iphone that is screwing up everything and since there are no memory usage screens or indicators nobody is going to know what is using the memory, and how to avoid getting to that point.

sounds really silly to me but for what it is worth..

I noticed with one (game) app, Aurora Feint, that the 1.0 version would frequently not start up. Just crash during its 30 second "loading" phase. Then the 1.1 - or latest version anyway - now comes up with a dialog box sometimes saying "your iphone is getting low on memory so please expect a crash and if so please restart". or something to that effect.

That message is very peculiar to me. The iphone can get low on (core) memory? and how is that getting used up? if it gets low on core memory then there would be crashes in all kinds of things (and there are - browser, primarily, but sometimes other standard apps as well). So, is there a giant memory leak somewhere? How can badly written appstore apps screw up the phone memory state if they are quit completely when you quit them? or is there a memory leak somewhere else in the standard OS? and if so, why wasn't it as apparent with the 2g iphone. It is all very puzzling.

And I have a new problem now - when on 3g I compose an email and hit send and the phone freezes for quite a while 20 seconds or so! then the keyboard goes away and the email gets sent. This is unrelated to the new firmware but again smells like memory exhaustion (some kind of recovery / garbage collecting procedure perhaps?). I wouldn't have expected that I'm not exactly a heavy user.

BKuhl : I have more details. I thought the restore had made things more reliable but after a full day, it appears I was a little premature in my assessment. Although I think I have narrowed things down a little.
I found that when entering New York, by the Port Authority Bus Terminal that even though I have full 3G signal strength I cannot load a single web page. As I walk up 8th Ave signal strength will not change, but suddenly pages will start to load.
Noticed the same thing on the way home. Heading towards PA, things stopped working. Go through the tunnel, pop out on the Jersey side - no signal strength change and suddenly lightening fast again.
Now, as I approach Giants stadium again. Full 3G stength, but can't load a single page. As I distance myself it returns to normal.

After 2 days, it seems like this is repeatable with consistency. The problems haven't changed, but I was able to determine the pattern.
BTW, prior to 2.0.2 NONE of this occurred!

Yes, I wasn't questioning the validity of your non-iPhone issues. Reread my post. While we all hope Apple fixes your problems, those very fixes could be workarounds for buggy AP firmware. I've worked with electrical engineers and software developers my entire career and many 'bug fixes' we implement are not fixing our bugs, but rather fixing bugs in other products.

Its good to see Apple working with you on resolution. It could be an Apple problem or a problem with your AP (that other wireless radios have implemented workarounds).

Return the phone, even if its working perfectly that may not last due to the manufacturing flaw in the connector between the amplifier and antennae, in any case the "updates" will drive you crazy.
1- if you are in the return period-great -or
2-if you ordered online and had the phone shipped you have 30 days (under federal law) to return for a complete refund no questions asked
3-if you paid with a card you a-try to return for a refund, when refused you can file a claim with your card company pointing out that the phone is defective (you are not interested in an exchange for another possibly defective phone or another brand which AT&T is trying to pull) and they will not help you, there is ample evidence now for that,
b-if granted the money will be put back into your account and its up to the seller to pay for the return, if the seller does nothing the phone is yours to keep as well, should the chargeback be disputed, at least with M/C and Visa there is little likelihood of it succeeding, customers always come first with them
4- if all else fails you can sue in small claims court for all your money back (costs about $30 and you sue the local outlet where you bought it and AT&T for the contract)

The longer you wait the less options you have!

Since Apple has not "come clean" with this its impossible to make an informed decision, even if you have a "perfect" phone there is no way to know if even some rough handling will turn it into a poor one due to the manufacturing defect.

No new router or router firmware; an airport patch issued by Apple.

I worked with Apple engineers to help fix the first go-round, and I'm working with engineers to fix the second: Wireless with the Touch (I don't own an iPhone). The issue is real, and it IS due to interaction with some access points.

But the objective facts to a rube, such as myself, are:

Macbook connects and performs fine with 2 diff access points

Powerbook connects and performs fine with 2 diff access points

Powermac (with original AP card) connects and performs fine with 2 diff access points

Dell C610 with Cisco Aironet card connects and performs fine with 2 diff access points

Two Touches connect but perform erratically to extreme on the same 2 access points.

There's a problem, and not just because I, the rube, have them, but because they are cropping up on support forums in numbers large enough to suggest a problem beyond rubism in rubeville.

I doubt I, the rube, would have received nearly ten phone calls from Apple engineers/executive customer relations since the beginning of my, the rube, problems if they (Apple) didn't recognize a growing problem that is indeed real. Blaming a vendor or chipset maker is out the window because I've, the rube, have been told that wireless issues has been documented on Apple branded radios.

The people at Apple who want to sell product realize that not everyone is going to replace devices that work perfectly fine with a newer model simply because a newer one comes along. WiFi radios are a good example.

If everyone plays nice with the WiFI standards then everything should be plucky-ducky. But sh*t happens, and someone with a Dell laptop and (insert brand here) wireless router who have zip, zero, zilch connection problems aren't very likely to purchase a Macbook after their iPod Touch doesn't hold a connection with the same while their Dell does. The Rubes don't have money to burn, and aren't as stupid as the non-rubes like to think they are.

iPods are a known gateway to Apple computer land, and that's not a bridge you want to burn. Granted, these problems are affecting a small percentage of people, but it's enough to be a real problem. It would appear that Apple prefers to work with willing customers to find the fix in silence and then release a patch or replacement product that does work without fanfare. Better PR that way than to admit an unacceptable % of a product has problems that can't be fixed in Rubeland because ...

I, the rube, am thinking of changing my posting name to 'teh rube' but I've yet to find a suitable avatar! ... :D

Sure but the wireless driver is closed-source from Broadcom and it is most likely determines compatibility with other devices.

I've learned that lesson, having been an early adopter before. If you can't wait for the kinks to get worked out, you're going to have to deal with some bullshit. By me, that's perfectly fine. What would piss me off is if these issues persisted for months and there was no communication from the company as to when a fix might be available--but that's not the case here. We know a big update is coming in September and we've already gotten two software updates since the launch on July 11th. All things considered I'd say that's pretty good.

So, I rebooted the iPhone and opened the Maps app on the way home and, well, it's a damn good thing it's not voice command as I would have turned into every wrong street along the way. It was continually off by about 100 yards through my cruise through northern NJ.. It was never off like that before and I now think that my initial problem was with interference regardless of the open sky I had.. So, it acts faster but it appears I have indeed losy accuracy.. My sync issues with photos still stands, IT IS TRULY all screwed up and I have another issue I'm still working on that I detailed in another thread..

Still loving it though...

It looks like apple is fixing a few things at a time. It would be nice if they told us what they think they are fixing.

jrobcet : I've tried disabling MobileMe and the contacts is still laggy. Can't find a rhyme or reason for it. Then again, it's not really an issue for me since I mainly use the Google app or voice dialer at this point. Just a minor annoyance at this point.

On the bright side, I've had no issues with 3G. The coverage in my area seems to be great. I've yet to experience any dropped calls.

Interesting that contacts are faster for you. I'm still seeing the same lag as before. Out of curiosity, are you using MobileMe to sync contacts?

And are you accessing the contacts from the icon from the home screeen, or from within the phone app? The reason I ask is because the lag is not as noticeable if I open my contacts from within the phone app.

Nope, not using MobileMe for that. Syncing directly through Address book, which seems to be getting all the flotsam and jetsam from my Mail program. It's a total mess, but there are a lot of addresses in there and it loads fast now. This is from the app on the home screen or from inside the phone.

Heh. I'm still running Tiger on ALL my Macs. So ...
As for updates, I'm usually at least one behind - that's how long I wait. However, my Touch hasn't worked correctly from day one. So each update is in hopes that the device works correctly. And yes, I've had it replaced already. I'd say buying a refurb through the Apple store won't happen again, but I know that can't be the problem. I think there is an issue afoot - in my case - with WiFi. I've ordered a new access point, even though I can reproduce the problem on three different '.11b' access points and three laptops work fine on each of those.

So ... let's hope the .11G radio I ordered (with firmware dated this year) will do the trick. If not? No more Apple wireless gadgets for me.

It *is* connected via USB cable. Thing is, I didn't want the phone to ring during the backup (thus canceling the backup and making it start over) so I put the phone in Airplane Mode first.

See, this stuff is so random I am getting 2 to 3 days now on 2.0.1. Everything is active except push. Email fetches every 15 mins. WiFi always on.

The varying reviews from people moving to 2.0.2 doesn't make it compelling for me. I'm not going to fix something that is not broken. Then again, if Apple opened-up and said waht was fixed, I could make a more informed decision. Perhaps all they did was do something to keep jailbreakers busy.

The big issue that I seem to have now is that I can barely ever bring up a web page successfully. Went to the Giant game last night and in a crowded stadium, NOTHING. On the way home, checked GMail from the web and loaded instantaneously. This morning, in NYC again NOTHING.
Looks like I am dead in any fairly dense cell phone area....

illJazz : Stupid YouTube. I uploaded straight through iMovie, but since my Youtube account is linked directly to my Google account, I don't really have a dedicated Youtube username/password. That's what may have confused iMovie and so even though I uploaded it, it never seems to have arrived.

Anyway.. I haven't been outside since I installed 2.0.2 so I can't confirm the GPS problems. I'll test it later today and report back.

But noticed improvements, at least on my end, is WiFi signal loss. Before, every once in a while, especially while I am on a call, 'net will totally give out. It will start off at full signal, like it should, then after about a page or two loading, signal drops to nothing, and drops the connection entirely. Only way to bring the net back was to restart the phone entirely.

Haven't had this issue occur yet since this update...

So far though, that has been the only complaint I have had regarding my iPhone, and its fixed now!

At the risk of starting a flame war, I can just imagine what would happen if Microsoft put out a Windas update with zero information on what was in the update. I know they can be brief at best but at least you have some idea. If Apple would at least offer some information on what was in the updates, all this speculation would not even exist. We wouldn't have to tiptoe around wondering if we should go for it or leave it alone (does Steve get a kick out of this shit or something?). I can only imagine that the 'bug fixes' were minor. I have to believe that Apple would announce something if they really fixed some of the significant problems being reported.

Titus Pullo : Not iPhone related, but there are real problems here with the Touch as well. I thought perhaps I was in some purgatory of bad Touch, bad luck, whatever.
Well, I went to Corporate Support straight to top-tier engineers to two Touches and both can't maintain a WiFi connection testing with three different access points.

Then I run into a guy on a forum who has been through three with the same problem!

Man ... this is like deja vu all over again. I'm ready to fold my cards and request a credit or refund. Between this, MMe and the hell I went through getting my Macbook to maintain Wifi and other problems .... whew.

Hope people with phone problems find relief, but I'm not expecting anything at this point.

cousintim : I had to Restore after 2.0.1 and again with 2.0.2. Unfortunately, this time the phone went into a Restore loop. With a little help from Google, I was able to recover. Everything is stable now. I wasn't having a problem with 3G signal strength or dropped calls before so I can't really comment on what's been fixed.

Well, yes, the display rotates to widescreen. I think what is being referred to is some rotation in the animation itself (which I do not see). Not sure exactly you meant though.

Don't update your phone while it's in Airplane Mode.

[I put my phone into Airplane Mode because inevitably, someone will call me while the phone is backing-up (which can take like 3 hours) or when it's syncing.]

My phone was stuck unable to activate afterward, because the phone's cellular radio was off.

The solution is the Slide for Emergency and type *#307* after which it will ask you if you want to disable Airplane Mode.

Once you disable Airplane Mode the signal strength bars will show-up and it will connect to WiFi if available. After reconnecting to iTunes the phone activated right away.

-When looking at the artist list and rotating the phone, there would be a 'lag' and then the screen would rotate into cover flow with more lag

After update
-Turning the screen causes a much faster fade-out/fade-in with no lag (into cover flow).

When you are in iPod mode and an album cover is on the screen, in the upper right corner is the song list button which will show the songs on that album. There is an animation that rotates the album to show the list and vise versa. Hope that makes sense :D

HiVolt : Well, i had to make a call and it dropped immediately after the other person (landline) picked up. First dropped call ever, as I didn't have any issues of this nature before. This will suck if all of a sudden it starts happening. I called right back and it was fine. Not sure if it could be weather related but we had a severe thunderstorm roll thru here about the same time.

Anyway, I dont know if it was in EDGE or 3G, as the iPhone just covers up that information when you are connected to WiFi.

Alan : The update went without a hitch. Though I had a slight scare when my eyeTV quit working. I was afraid I maxed out the USB ports and locked, not only the EyeTV, but the iPhone. In the future I'll make sure I'm using the bare minimum of USB ports.

Much better for Apple to admit some phones could be working better and issue a "software fix' maybe 2 or 3 although they will never claim these "fixes" address the real problem. Keep the situation totally confused and it will go away and they will release another model which people will probably still line up for!
This is not uncommon for any manufacturing company including my own. The likely-hood of this increases greatly with extreme competition.

andrewhaji : Just updated my iPhone with no problems. No noticeable differences. The only major gripe I have is with typing in the SMS application. Every so often it goes into "slow motion" mode and it takes forever to type. Hopefully this was fixed.

anon : Apple knows exactly what the problem is but cannot estimate how many bad phones they would have to replace, so for now they are not admitting anything "major" is wrong since all phones work to varying extents this may be the way it stays with this model.
If it was say 1 batch from 1 factory,worker they could narrow it down but since its worldwide its a flaw in the manufacturing process, either design or worker related.

anon : the latest "guess" is that the chip is fine, also I am postive Apple throughly tested it but they could not stand over the shoulder of every Chinese worker watching exactly how they put each phone together in a very sensitive area of manufacturing.
I doubt anyone can even estimate of number of phones in each level of workmanship from perfect to very poor. You would think that "quality control" would spot any problem BEFORE they hit the market, thats why I maintained (before the phone was released) that Apple rushed to get this phone out with all the extreme competition to deal with.
Count your good luck if you have no problems and probabily wait on any updates.

justin : There isn't any evidence it is a signal path problem, the most informed guesses say it may be an issues with the infineon chip and how they decide to move off 3g due to cell congestion (perceived by the chip). Until apple confirm things either way or a lot of time passes there is no reason to give up on the idea a firmware fix can be found.

Just another excuse for Apple not to replace the badly working phones, maybe blame it on AT&T too, and they are willing to sacrifice some perfect phones too.
The more confused the situation-the less phones they have to take back! You only have to look at the situation worldwide to realize that although AT&T offers a lousy 3G on one band only, some of the phones are not working in many other countries,

Daemon : Well, my contacts app/list is much faster than it was before. Haven't made any calls yet, but typically the first 2-3 times I tried making a call on 2.0.1 it would just say call failed immediately. I'd have to keep retrying until it would work.
