Infurno : Well I originally called Cogeco and they were sending a person to swap my router on the 28th(3 weeks from the day I called)

Since then I called cogeco on Monday after waiting like 40 minutes for my router to resync.(Part of a 2 hour time frame my net was down) The lady I talked to said she was getting errors from tests she was doing(of course she was because I was actually experiencing a problem at that time). So she set me up with a Technician tomorrow whose gonna come in a check the lines and if needed switch my modem.

I did get annoyed when they called me last night telling me they had watched my connection and couldn't see anything wrong so they wanted to cancel my appointment with the Tech Guy...First they only see something wrong when I actually am experiencing the problem..Second; my net was going on and off all night yesterday every 15-25 minutes.

So hopefully after tomorrow, I won't be experiencing the problem anymore.

said by Asawulf :

Just to be sure : is there anything (electronical) that uses wifi and such (wireless modem, wireless router) close to the modem ? (within 3 feet) I know some equipment can cause similar issues...

My Wireless router and modem are both next to one another sitting on top of a computer on the main floor of my house. But its not really an intermittent signal problem..my modem either looses its connection all together, or it will have a connection, but won't connect to my computer.

From what I can see the signals and SNR are good so it lies somewhere else... Borky modem maybe? If the router is out of the equation and it still happenn then lets rule out the router ;) If the modem is taking 15-20 minutes to resynch itself that's definatly a problem, it should not take any longer than 2-3 minutes (if that...).

Maybe intermittent signal issue that is not visible in the screenie you posted? Maybe someone in Ontario can have a look at your specific area and clear that out as well (or confirm...)

Just to be sure : is there anything (electronical) that uses wifi and such (wireless modem, wireless router) close to the modem ?
Infurno : Yeah..I'm pretty sure I'm in the same boat, but mines weird.
I hooked my computer directly to the modem..now while that severly reduced the actual traffic going, I never really noticed any problems. Which makes it look like my router. However ever so often my modem will automatically reset(as if I had power cycled it), which makes it look like the modem.

So all in all I think its a combination of both my router and modem. But since my router is brand spanking new(and this also happened with my old router)...I'll get them to replace my modem first before going off to buy another new router.

And to answer your guys request for the IP look up.
When my computers are working fine, it shows as being perfectly operational with no problems. I won't be able to go to any webpages, my MSN dissconnects, its as if I didn't have any net. I am fully connected to my router, and all other devices on the LAN no problem. When I log into my router's interface, it shows me as having a fully active WAN connection that has been running for xdays:xhours:xminutes. All the normal connectivity lights on my modem are on and blinking the way they always do.

As an additional note, if I pull the power on my modem and replug it in, I've timed it as long as 20 minutes for it to go through its start up sequence. Likewise, when I do a Release/Renew for the WAN IP in my router's GUI, I've timed it upwards of 15 minutes before it is able to get an IP and DNS information.

Can you actually paste a link to the speedtest please? »speedtest.cogeco.net/
(After you run it, it'll give you a link you can paste).
I am not currently at home, but I will post the link tonight at some point when I home.

Also, would like to see the forthcoming line quality test.
So I'm not sure wether it works or not, I waited like 30 minutes for the test before I had to close the window.
I got a message from the thing saying that the test was complete. it had the response "target IP does not respond to ICMP ping"
»/linequality/nil/2421174

Furthermore, might not be a bad idea to post a screenshot of your modem values.
[SW Ontario] Intermittent Problem

anon : 1.)What, specifically, is your issue?
Bit of a long one...
My internet connection is intermittent, especially with my wired computer using Vista Ultimate 32bit. Sometimes it works fine for hours, sometimes is will work for 15 seconds before the problem reoccurs. I have similar issues with wireless computers(just not as frequently, and usually only with Vista..inherint flaw maybe?) Anyways..usually if left alone, it will just fix itself, but sometimes it requires a reset of the WAN IP my router is getting, and sometimes requires full restart of the modem.
The common thing is that when ever it happens, I am still able to use my LAN fine, just not through the WAN.

2.)How long has this issue been going on?
Various similar problems over a few years.

3.)Is there a specific time of day that this issue is most prevalent?
Does whenever I use the computer count as a specific time?(Family tends to not have this issue running a computer w. XP)

4.)If this is related to internet connectivity (ie: NOT mail, usenet, etc) -do you have more than one computer?
If so, is the problem prevalent on both?
-do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation..what channels?
Part 1 of this question can be answered by reading question 1. Yes we have cable TV, but its always been slightly degraded due to old cables running throughout the house.

5.)Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say?
A year or so ago. Whenever I called them it always ends up working fine when I get them on the phone, so they haven't been able to see the issue. They then pointed to my router saying it was probably because of it.(Which has now been switched to a newer router)

6.)What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem?
Changing Computer Settings
Changing Router Settings
Ping tests from the router - when internet works, they go through, when its not they don't.
Speed tests - can only be done when the net is working, and my last one returned 4Mb/s down and 600Kb/s up.

I'm reluctant to call Tech support becuase I'm guessing they will just point to my router again...

Any ideas?
