Do the updates for Boot Camp come automatically from Software Update on the Mac side, or do I need to get them from the XP side? If from XP, are they located at Tools>Windows/Microsoft Update or do I need to go to Apple.com to get it? Thanks! |

4 edits | The Boot Camp updates including device drivers and interface drivers (like the keyboard manager that gives you the eject button) come from the Apple Software Update for Windows utility which is installed with the Windows boot camp drivers install. It runs in Windows. Windows operating system updates would come from the Windows Update utility just like all Windows installs.
So on the Windows side run both Windows updates and Apple Software Update for Windows. On the Mac side, run the regular software update which will update the boot camp partitioning tool (the utility that starts the boot camp install process) if necessary.
Apple Software Update for Windows instructions »support.apple.com/kb/HT2305
IOW once your boot camp Windows install is done, all updates to Windows functionality including OS, driver and mac hardware interface (eg iSight, keyboard eject button, restart into OS X utility, all the keyboard manager utility stuff etc) are done from the Windows side via either Apple SW update for Windows (for all the drivers and Apple related sofeware) or Windows Updates (for operating system and other Microsoft software).
You can also install regular separate updated drivers if you want. For example I run the latest Catalyst drivers for my ATI cards in my Mac Pros. They install just as they would in any Pee Cee. |

| Another question... When I close the MacBook, it goes to sleep. When I am in XP and close the MacBook, I don't believe it is going to sleep (I heard the fan while it sat there). Is there a setting that I need to check to get XP to go to sleep (hibernate?) when I close it? Thanks! |

1 edit | Apparently, my daughter's MacBook isn't set up properly. I installed XP a while ago and don't recall if I installed the Windows drivers, or not. When I shut the laptop the light is on, but not pulsing. Under XP/Control Panel/Power Options/ there isn't an option for hibernate or sleep (or what ever it's called). On the advanced tab, under Power Buttons, closing the lid has only one choice "Do Nothing". Under Power Schemes tab for the Portable/Laptop the settings are 'monitor off' and 'hard disk off' after a period of time (15/30 when plugged in and 5/5 when on batteries). Yesterday, I noticed the fan was on even though the laptop was sitting closed for quite a while, so I am assuming that the hard drive never shut off.
I am on vacation and need XP to get to my office, so I am leaving the laptop connected all day.
1- Is "hard disk off" similar to OS X's sleep mode? 2- If my fan was going yesterday, is it safe to assume my hard disk didn't turn off? 3- I assume that there drivers that I need to install to get the "hibernate" mode, etc. If so, and considering that my Leopard disk is at home, can these drivers be downloaded from Apple.com? I've run Windows Update, Apple Software Update (in XP) as well as keeping OS X properly updated.
Thanks! |

1 edit | 1. Hard disk off isn't sleep/hibernate. It only spins down the hard drives motor to save battery life and supposedly save wear and tear on the hard drive.
2. The fans are thermal controlled and will come on whenever temps warrant, whether in sleep or not (at least my MacBook Pro and old MacBook do).
3. You can check in your Control Panel to see if the drivers are installed. They're installed as part of a larger package which includes the keyboard manager and startup disk manager. If you see the boot camp cpl in the control panel, all of the drivers should be installed.

3 edits | Hibernation and sleep in XP are 2 different states. Sleep shuts down non-essential stuff while hibernation copys RAM to the hard drive and shuts down, allowing you to boot back up into the previous state faster than a normal boot.
But it looks like Windows didn't install all the APM components. To do what you're trying to do would be in the advanced tab and in addition to do nothing it should have Stand By and clicking do-nothing should give you a pulldown to choose the other selections. |

Dogfather Premium join:2007-12-26 Laguna Hills, CA | reply to haroldo I haven't used XP in a while. For your power management scheme are you using laptop/notebook? I'm wondering if the scheme that is selected changes the options available under advanced. |

| Thanks for all your help! I selected laptop/notebook and the configuration of the screen is different from the screen shot, as well as the linked Microsoft page. Under Boot Camp instructions.. quote: 1 Eject the Windows installation disc. a Go to My Computer. b Select the optical drive (D:). c Click Eject this disk in the System Tasks list. 2 Insert the Mac OS X disc. The installer should start automatically. If you have AutoRun turned off, double-click the setup.exe file to start installing the drivers. 3 Follow the onscreen instructions. If a message appears that says the software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway. Windows that appear only briefly during the installation dont require your input. If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you must respond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows. 4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only). 5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
I'm guessing that after installing Windows, I went ahead with the typical Windows installation (update, firewall, hosts file, etc.) and I must have neglected to load the Windows drivers. Are these drivers available anywhere (other than on my Leopard installation disc)?
Thanks, again, for the handholding! |
